The Elberfelder Schachgesellschaft 1851 (ESG 1851) is one of the oldest chess clubs in Germany. It was founded in Elberfeld (today part of Wuppertal ) in 1851 .
history
The Elberfelder Schachgesellschaft was founded in 1851 in the aftermath of the great success of Adolf Anderssen , "the old master of the German art of chess". Together with the Düsseldorf Chess Club from 1854 and the Krefeld Chess Club, the club played a key role in the founding of the West German Chess Federation, the most important forerunner of the German Chess Federation , which organized the so-called Rhenish Chess Congresses from 1861 . When Düsseldorf was not the venue for the first time in 1865, the congress was held in Elberfeld (winner was Gustav Neumann ).
A local competitor of the Elberfelder Verein was for a long time the similarly traditional Barmer SV 1865 .
With the Second World War, the Elberfeld Chess Society and the gambling hall also lost parts of their archive. The casino was not rebuilt after the war. A phase began with more frequent changes of venue.
After reunification , the club contributed to the development of the women's Bundesliga . The Elberfeld Chess Society won the German women's team championship six times from 1993 to 1999 . The club is the record winner at the German women's championships in blitz chess and won the title six times in a row between 1992 and 1997. One of the highlights was the staging of a final round of the European Cup in Wuppertal. In the 1999/2000 season, Elberfelder SG withdrew its team from the women's Bundesliga as the reigning German champions .
In the 2018/19 season, the club took part in six senior teams and four youth teams. The first team plays in the Regionalliga Niederrhein, the fourth highest German division.
