UPS Volksbank Halle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The chess department of the Universitätssportverein Halle eV (USV Halle) started under the name USV Volksbank Halle until July 1st, 2016. After the Volksbank Halle withdrew as a sponsor, the department returned to its original name USV Halle, section chess. The USV Halle is a large sports club from Halle (Saale) with over 3000 members in 22 sports departments. The number of members in the chess section fluctuates just below 100 members.

history

The origins of the chess section of the USV Halle can be found in the university sports community of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg , which was founded on April 1, 1949 as the university sports community “Geschwister-Scholl”. On October 1, 1954, in the course of the founding of the sports club, the 10 most powerful sections of the HSG Wissenschaft Halle with around 950 athletes were delegated to the SC Wissenschaft Halle . This also included the chess section. As early as the 1955/1956 season, the SC Wissenschaft Halle team was able to win the championship title in the first-ever East German league. In the ranks of the team were the players Burkhard Malich and Heinz Liebert , who are still very well known in Halle today . In the 1956/1957 season, the title win could be repeated.

On June 30, 1958, the Sports Club Chemie Halle emerged from the merger of the SC Wissenschaft Halle and SC Chemie Halle-Leuna associations. In 1968, chess was spun off from SC Chemie Halle. From then on, the company sports community Buna Halle (from 1967) and Buna Halle-Neustadt (from 1975) started under the club name.

In the GDR team championship in chess, top placings were achieved every year.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the club produced many internationally successful players. The chess grandmasters Burkhard Malich and Uwe Bönsch , the international master Heinz Liebert and the international masters and multiple GDR masters Brigitte Burchardt , Annett Wagner-Michel , Marion Heintze and Iris Mai started their chess careers in Halle. Constanze Jahn (WIM) and Heinz Liebert (IM) have been members of the USV Halle for many years. Burkhard Malich has also been a member of the association again since 2009.

With the restoration of German unity , the chess players had to regroup. The attempt to establish an independent chess club ( Association of Chess Friends Buna Halle ) failed for economic reasons. In 1993 the entire chess department joined the University Sports Club Halle eV and formed an independent sports department there.

Since 2006, the women's national league team has appeared under the name USV Volksbank Halle , with which Volksbank Halle was presented as the main sponsor. In April 2007 she was German champion in the team championship in women's chess. This title was won again in March 2010. The international grandmasters Tatiana Kononenko (UKR), Ildikó Mádl (HUN), Nikoletta Lakos (HUN), Tatiana Melamed (UKR), Jordanka Belić (GER), Anna Scharewitsch (BLR) and Natalia Straub (GER) contributed significantly to this success . Claudia Eckhardt from Halle was also part of the successful team.

After more than 20 years of uninterrupted and successful participation, the team of the USV Volksbank Halle withdrew from the 1st women's chess Bundesliga from the 2015/16 season. The increasing professionalism, cost aspects and the departure of female players from their own chess school forced them to take this step. In return, the association is again focusing more on developing its own young talents and specifically promoting girls' chess in the process.

Organization of chess tournaments

The association organized many international chess tournaments in cooperation with the German Chess Association of the GDR and later with the German Chess Federation.

The international women's chess tournament of the BSG Buna Halle / Halle-Neustadt was held annually from 1967 to 1987. From 1974 to 1984 several high-class grandmaster tournaments took place, which were held together with the women's chess tournament and other framework tournaments as international chess festivals. The highlights were the presence of the ex-world champion Michail Tal at the 1974 grandmaster tournament and the challenger Nana Alexandria (women's world champion) at the 1981 grandmaster tournament. In 1978 the most powerful chess tournament to date took place, with an average rating of 2502 for the players involved.
