Uwe Bönsch (born October 15, 1958 in Halle / Saale ) is a German chess grandmaster . Until 2013 he was the national coach of the German Chess Federation .

Career

At the age of five he learned from his father Ernst Bönsch the chess game . Just five years later, his great talent was shown at the first Young Pioneer Championship of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). This took place in October 1968 in Halle-Neustadt . He won confidently with six points from seven games and remained undefeated.

In 1974 he was GDR youth champion. From then on he was one of the most successful chess players in Germany on both the national and the international level. In 1995 he won the Bad Wörishofen chess festival ahead of Felix Levin .

In the 1990s he wrote various publications on chess studies, partly as his father's co-author.

From 1997 to 2013 he worked as a national coach for the German Chess Federation . During his tenure, two of the greatest successes of the German national team came with second place at the 2000 Chess Olympiad in Istanbul and winning the 2011 European Team Championship in Porto Carras . In 1998 he became a member of the coaching committee of the World Chess Federation . Since 1999 he has been an A-license trainer of the German Chess Federation. In 2004 he received the title of FIDE Senior Trainer.

In the GDR, Bönsch played for BSG Buna Halle-Neustadt , where he played in the first team in the league as a 13-year-old and won the GDR championship several times. After German reunification, Bönsch played in the 1st Bundesliga from 1990 to 2012 . From 1990 to 1995 he played at Bayern Munich , with whom he became German team champion in 1991 , 1992 , 1993 and 1995 and won the European Club Cup in 1992 . From 1995 to 1997 Bönsch played for SV Empor Berlin , from 1997 to 2000 for Dresdner SC , from 2000 to 2002 for König Plauen, from 2002 to 2009 for TV Tegernsee , from 2009 to 2011 again for FC Bayern Munich; Since the 2011/12 season he has been playing for USV TU Dresden , where he initially played in the 1st Bundesliga, in the two following seasons in the 2nd Bundesliga and since the 2014/15 season again in the 1st Bundesliga.

In Austria, Bönsch has been playing for SK Sparkasse Jenbach since 2001, with whom he was Austrian team champion in 2010 , 2011 , 2013 and 2015 .
