Roland Schmaltz (* 15. November 1974 in Mannheim ) is a German Chess - Grandmaster .

Life

Schmaltz was known on chess servers under the pseudonym Hawkeye (falcon's eye) . He is multiple (unofficial) world champion in bullet chess (1 minute per game), the very fast form of blitz chess . According to his own information, he played around 100,000 games on different servers.

In 1993 he won the German youth championship in Münster . In 1995 he started studying business administration at the University of Mannheim , but did not finish it. He then completed an apprenticeship as an IT specialist . He won the Baden Individual Championship three times (1996, 1997 and 1998). In 1998 he became German Blitzmeister , in 2000 he received the title of International Master , and at the end of 2001 the title of Grand Master. In 2004 he wrote The Complete Chess Server Guide . Schmaltz lived in Brisbane , Australia from 2005 to 2012 , where he married in 2009. After a phase as a professional poker player, he has been playing with the second team of OSG Baden-Baden in the 2nd Bundesliga South since 2012 and works as a chess trainer. In the 2015/16 season Schmaltz also plays in the Austrian 1st Bundesliga for LA Kraftanlage Ottakring . Since 2013 he has been the A-trainer of the German Chess Federation. In 2015 Roland Schmaltz won the German rapid chess championship in Leipzig . Since February 1, 2016, he has been managing director of the Baden-Baden Chess Center for one year , succeeding Markus Keller, who had died a few weeks earlier.

In the German 1st Bundesliga Schmaltz played from 1994 to 1996 for SK Zähringen and from 2002 to 2005 for SC Baden-Oos (from 2004 OSC Baden-Baden ). In the Dutch Meesterklasse he played from 2000 to 2004 for Rotterdam , in the 2004/05 season for the champion ZZICT / De Variant Breda and in season 2017/18 for MuConsult Apeldoorn . Schmaltz played in the French Top 16 for Echiquier Niçois in the 2004/05 season , and in the Swiss Bundesliga he played for Schwarz-Weiss Bern in the 2015/16 season .
