Ralf Appel (born July 18, 1971 in Pirmasens ) is a German grandmaster in chess . He is considered a blitz and rapid chess specialist .

successes

In 1988 he became German single champion in blitz chess . In 1989 he was German youth champion (U20) in Bochum over the full time. In these two years he was also the individual champion of Rhineland-Palatinate . In 1992, 1993 and 1995 he won the Gusenburg Rapid Chess Open . In 1996 he became International Master . In 1997 and 98 he won the Dr. Wagner memorial tournament, a blitz tournament, in Höheinöd near Pirmasens. In May 2001 he achieved a GM standard at the Borowski tournament in Essen . In 2005 he was with the chess club Wattenscheid 1930 German Blitz team champion. Also in 2007 he qualified for the upcoming German Blitz team championship, which took place in Rinteln , by winning the NRW Blitzmannschafts championship. On the top board he got 16.5 points from 20 games. In 2006 he also won the Pirmasens Rapid Chess Open, in August 2007 he was tied for first at the Hogeschool Zeeland Open in Vlissingen .

He had his first appearance in the German Chess League in 1993 for SV Castrop-Rauxel . After SV Castrop-Rauxel withdrew from the Bundesliga in 2002, Appel moved to SV Wattenscheid . In the 2005/06 season he fulfilled his second, 2007/2008 the last required grandmaster norm. For the 2014/15 season, Ralf Appel switched to the Solingen chess company and became German team champion with them in 2016 . From the 2016/2017 season, Ralf Appel will play again for his youth club SC Pirmasens in the 1st Rhineland-Palatinate League. In the Portuguese first division he plays for the Clube Pesca Nautica Desportiva Albufeira .
