The New York Institute of Technology (also NYIT and New York Tech ) is a private college in Old Westbury in Nassau County off New York City . The college has three campuses, two on Long Island and one on the Upper West Side of Manhattan , as well as global facilities and an "online college". Founded in 1955, the college is considered the birthplace of 3D animation. The founder of the NYIT Computer Graphics Laboratory, Edwin Catmull later also founded Pixar . NYIT is considered the founder of the computer graphics industry and one of the best research and development centers in the world.

history

The founders, and especially Alexander Schure, wanted the college to be a career-oriented school whose main objective is to prepare students for their chosen careers. NYIT began teaching in 1955 at 500 Pacific Street in Brooklyn , New York City with just nine students.

The importance of higher education was hotly debated at the time. There was concern at the time that American schools and colleges would not be able to meet the need for skilled workers and scientists of national importance. This consensus, in turn, led to the fear that if this theory were established as the maxim of the educational system, the American population would only consist of scientists and engineers.

The first chairmen struck a kind of balance between career-oriented and social classes. The leaders of the college developed a philosophy of success early on, and with the help of many additional services for students, they tried to guarantee the success of the college.

In April 1958 the move to Manhattan took place, namely to 135-145 Western 70th Street.
