The Nassau County is a county in the state of New York of the United States . At the 2010 census , the county had 1,339,532 residents and a population density of 1,805.3 people per square kilometer. For 2015, the United States Census Bureau estimated the population at 1,361,350. The county seat is Mineola . Nassau County is on the island of Long Island and was formed from the eastern part of Queens County in 1898 because the residents voted against incorporation into New York City.

It was named after Wilhelm III. of Orange-Nassau , King of England.

There is a National Historic Site in the county , the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site . Three locations have National Historic Landmark status , the Sloop Christeen , Fort Massapeag Archeological Site, and the John Philip Sousa House . A total of 139 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 17, 2018).

The county covers an area of ​​1,173 square kilometers, of which 431 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by the New York borough of Queens to the west and Suffolk County to the east .
