Long Beach (nickname "The City by the Sea") is a city in Nassau County , New York , in the south of Long Island .
It was granted city rights in 1922 and has 33,275 inhabitants with 16,450 households (as of 2010) on an area of 10.1 km².
Long Beach is on the Atlantic coast. Council executive director since June 29, 2006 is Edwin L. Eaton, who held this office from 1979 to 1999 and 2001.
Long Beach is connected to the Long Island Rail Road network.
