Charles "Charlie" McAvoy (born December 21, 1997 in Long Beach , New York ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League since April 2017 .

Career

Charlie McAvoy was born in Long Beach, New York, and in his youth he played for the New Jersey Rockets in a regional youth league . At the beginning of the 2013/14 season, the defender moved to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP), the central talent factory of the US Ice Hockey Association in Ann Arbor , Michigan . With the junior selection of the NTDP, McAvoy took part in the game operations of the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest junior league in the United States, and represented his home country at the same time on an international level. He won the gold medal with Team USA at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2014 in January as well as the following year at the U18 World Championship in 2015 . After two years, the defender retired from the NTDP and enrolled at Boston University in autumn 2015 . For their Terriers he was henceforth in the Hockey East , a league of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) on the ice. As a freshman he scored 25 points scorer in 37 games and was then appointed to the all-rookie team of Hockey East at the end of the season . He also made his debut at the turn of the year for the US U20 national team when he won the bronze medal at the 2016 U20 World Cup . After this season he chose the Boston Bruins in the NHL Entry Draft in 2016 from 14 th position. For now, however, McAvoy returned to Boston University for one more season, during which he was elected 2017 U20 World Champion with Team USA and the Hockey East First All-Star Team .

Following his second college season, McAvoy moved on a trial basis (amateur tryout contract) to the Providence Bruins , the farm team of the Boston Bruins from the American Hockey League (AHL). After his first four professional appearances there, the defender finally signed an entry-level contract in Boston in April 2017 and made his National Hockey League debut just a few days later in the Bruins' first game in the 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs against the Ottawa Senators ( NHL). The Bruins lost 2: 4 in the series; however, this gave McAvoy the opportunity to make his senior national team debut at the 2017 World Cup . At the tournament he reached fifth place with the team. The following year he won the bronze medal with the team at the 2018 World Cup and was also included in the NHL All-Rookie Team .

In September 2019, McAvoy signed a new three-year contract in Boston, which should earn him an average annual salary of $ 4.9 million.
