Jaroslav Halák (born May 13, 1985 in Bratislava , Czechoslovakia ) is a Slovak ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League since July 2018 .
Career
Jaroslav Halák began his career in the junior team of HC Slovan Bratislava and came in the 2002/03 season for the first time with the professionals of HK Ružinov 99 Bratislava to use. After he was able to win the silver medal with the Slovak national junior team at the U18 Junior World Championship in 2003 , he was selected by the Canadiens de Montréal in the NHL Entry Draft 2003 in the ninth round at position 271.
He stayed in Slovakia for another year and played for the juniors and professionals of HC Slovan Bratislava and for HC Dukla Senica . He was able to recommend himself for higher tasks through good performances and moved to North America in the summer of 2004 and played in the Canadian junior league Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec for the Lewiston MAINEiacs . He began the 2005/06 season with the Long Beach Ice Dogs , the Montreal farm team , in the ECHL . In February 2006 he was then brought to the Hamilton Bulldogs , another farm team of the Canadiens, in the American Hockey League , where he remained from then on. He had performed very well on both teams.
The 2006/07 season he initially played in the AHL for the Bulldogs and was one of the best goalkeepers in the league. When Cristobal Huet , the Canadiens goalkeeper, was injured in February 2007, Halák was called to the NHL squad. On February 18, he came in a 3-2 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets for his first use in the NHL. In the following weeks he showed convincing performances and finally ousted David Aebischer , who had taken over the role of the goalkeeper. In the fight for the playoff places Halák developed into an important support for the Canadiens, but in the end it was not enough for the team.
In September 2007 he competed with the 20-year-old Carey Price for a place in the NHL squad, but could not prevail and was sent back to the AHL to the Hamilton Bulldogs, but was back in the NHL team in January 2008 Canadiens brought in.
In the 2009/10 season Halák made his breakthrough in the NHL after his competitor Carey Price brought poor performance. With the help of his good performance, the Canadiens reached the play-offs. In these he confirmed his safe style of play from the main round and made it with his team with wins against the Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins in the conference finals. In this the Canadiens failed at the Philadelphia Flyers . After the 2009/10 season, the Canadiens management decided to rely on Price as their goalkeeper in the future. Therefore, Halák was given to St. Louis Blues in June 2010 in exchange for Lars Eller and Ian Schultz . In the 2011/12 season Halák helped the Blues to the lowest conceded goals in the league, so he and his teammate Brian Elliott received the William M. Jennings Trophy .
During the lockout of the NHL in the 2012/13 season , Halák came to Europe to keep himself fit with his hometown club Slovan Bratislava. He signed a lockout contract with Lausitzer Füchsen in the 2nd Bundesliga , but was only used in one game.
On February 28, 2014, Halák was transferred to the Buffalo Sabers as part of a transfer deal that brought Ryan Miller and Steve Ott to St. Louis . However, Halák gave them five days later to the Washington Capitals , which in return sent Michal Neuvirth and Rostislav Klesla to the Sabers. After twelve appearances at the end of the regular season, however, he left the Capitals again when his rights for a four-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2014 were given to the New York Islanders . On May 22, 2014, he signed a four-year contract with the Islanders.
In his first season in New York, Halák set a new franchise record with 38 wins in the regular season . During the 2016/17 season, however, Halák was unable to build on his achievements and was sent back to the AHL for the first time since the 2007/08 season, to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , in December 2016 . Jean-François Bérubé took his place in the NHL squad . As a result, his contract was not renewed after the 2017/18 season, so he joined the Boston Bruins as a free agent in July 2018 and signed a two-year contract there. There he won his second William M. Jennings Trophy at the end of the shortened 2019/20 season together with his teammate Tuukka Rask .
International
Halák represented his home country in a large number of international tournaments. In 2003 he took part in the U18 World Junior Championship with the Slovak U18 team and won the silver medal. In the following two years he was part of the Slovak squad at the U20 World Junior Championships in 2004 and 2005 , where he was used as a regular goalkeeper in every game and finished sixth and seventh with the U20 selection.
In 2007 he was appointed to the Slovak national team for the first time and took part in the men's world championship with them. During the tournament he was used in two games, one game ending with a win for the Slovaks. Two years later, at the 2009 World Cup , it was used again.
In February 2010 Halák was nominated for the Olympic squad of Slovakia for the 2010 Winter Olympics, where he was used as the goalkeeper in every game of the tournament. The Slovak team finished the Olympic tournament in fourth place after losing the bronze medal game to the Finnish selection . Slovakia thus achieved its best placement at the Olympics since Czechoslovakia was triggered. He was also the goalkeeper of his team at the 2011 World Cup in Slovakia.
Halák took part in the World Cup of Hockey 2016 with Team Europe and only had to admit defeat there in the final of the Canadian selection.
