Lars Fosgaard Eller (born May 8, 1989 in Rødovre ) is a Danish ice hockey player . The center has been under contract with the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League since June 2016 and won the Stanley Cup with the team in the 2018 playoffs . Before that, he spent six years with the Canadiens de Montréal . His father Olaf was also a professional ice hockey player and is now a coach.
Career
Lars Eller began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of the Rødovre Mighty Bulls , where he was active until 2005. He then received a contract with the Swedish club Frölunda HC , for which he made his debut in the Elitserien in the 2007/08 season after a year in their youth department . He gave three templates in a total of 21 games. In addition, the attacker was on the ice in 19 games for Borås HC in the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan . In the 2008/09 season , the Dane was able to increase to a total of 33 scorer points in 58 games for Frölunda in the Elitserien. In 2007, when he was also the top scorer and best preparer for the J20 SuperElit , he became Swedish U20 champion with his club in 2008.
In the 2007 NHL Entry Draft , the left shooter was also selected in the first round as the 13th player of the St. Louis Blues . On November 5, 2009 he made his debut for the Blues in the National Hockey League and also scored his first goal. Most of the 2009/10 season , however, he was used by their farm team Peoria Rivermen in the American Hockey League . In these he was able to convince with 18 goals and 39 assists in 70 games and was elected to the all-rookie team of the AHL. He was also allowed to take part in the AHL All-Star Classic in 2010 . In June 2010 the St. Louis Blues gave him together with Ian Schultz in exchange for Jaroslav Halák to the Canadiens de Montréal , where he was able to earn a regular place in their NHL team straight away in the 2010/11 season .
In June 2016, Eller moved to the Washington Capitals , who in return each sent a second-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft in 2017 and 2018 to Montréal. With the Capitals, he won the Stanley Cup in the 2018 playoffs, the first title in franchise history , while he himself became the first Dane to be immortalized on the trophy. In addition, he managed the decisive goal to 4: 3 in the fifth game of the final series, which meant the Stanley Cup win.
International
For Denmark, Eller participated in the junior division at the U18 World Junior Championships in Division I in 2006 and 2007 , when he was the best assists in the tournament, as well as in the U20 World Junior Championships in Division I in 2007 , when he had the best plus / minus balance of the Tournament, and participated in 2009 and the U20 World Junior Championship of the top division in 2008 .
At senior level he was in the squad of his country at the World Championships in 2008 , 2010 , 2012 and 2016 as well as the qualification for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver .
