Alexander Michailowitsch Ovechkin ( Russian Александр Михайлович Овечкин ; English transcription: Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin ; born September 17, 1985 in Moscow , Soviet Union ) is a Russian ice hockey player . The left winger plays since 2005 for the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League , which it in the NHL Entry Draft in 2004 at the first overall position had selected. With the Capitals he won the Stanley Cup in 2018 and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player . He is considered one of the best ice hockey players in history, especially in terms of his skills as a goalscorer. He was the only player in NHL history to win the Maurice Richard Trophy nine times as the NHL's top scorer. He also reached the 40-goal mark for the eleventh time in his career during the 2019/20 season ; only "The Great One" Wayne Gretzky was more successful. Furthermore, the Russian was honored three times with the Hart Memorial Trophy and the Lester B. Pearson / Ted Lindsay Award as the most valuable player in the league, while he led the NHL in scorer points in 2008 and therefore received the Art Ross Trophy . With the Washington Capitals, which he has led as captain since 2010 , he also holds numerous records , including most games, goals and scorer points.

On the international level, Ovechkin was three times world champion with the Russian national team , but so far missed the medal ranks with the Sbornaja at the Winter Olympics .

Career

HK Dynamo Moscow (2001-2005)

At the age of 16 Ovechkin played in the 2001/02 season for the second team of the professional division of HK Dynamo Moscow and was appointed to the first team of the Super League in the same season . Due to his good performance, he took part in the World Cup for this age group with the Russian U18 national team and won the silver medal. With 14 goals and four assists in the eight tournament games, he was the top scorer and top scorer of the tournament. From the 2002/03 season Ovechkin was an integral part of the first team of HK Dynamo Moscow and played a solid year with 15 points scorer.

In January 2003 he also ran for the first time for the Russian U20 selection at the Junior World Cup . Russia defended the title they had won last year and Ovechkin was together with Patrik Bärtschi , Igor Grigorenko and Jussi Jokinen , who scored all six goals, the best scorer in the World Cup. Three months later, Ovechkin also won the bronze medal at the U18 World Cup. In the 2003/04 game year Ovechkin was the third-best scorer of HK Dynamo Moscow, but he could not record a team success with them until then. And in 2004 there was no success at the international level either. After a fifth place in the U20 World Cup , Russia failed in May 2004 at Ovechkin's first participation in the Senior World Cup in the second round .

Thanks to his good performance in international tournaments, Ovetschkin had attracted the attention of the National Hockey League franchises and was considered the greatest talent of his class even before the 2004 NHL Entry Draft , so that the Washington Capitals finally selected him as the first overall . However, he could not make his NHL debut in the 2004/05 season because the season was canceled due to the lockout . Instead, Ovechkin played another year for HK Dynamo Moscow alongside his NHL-experienced compatriots Pawel Dazjuk , Maxim Afinogenow , Alexander Frolow and Andrei Markow , who had returned to their homeland due to the game stop in North America, and won the Russian championship.

Also in 2005, Ovetschkin celebrated his last successes at the U20 World Junior Championship by winning the silver medal and third place in the scorer ranking behind Patrice Bergeron and Ryan Getzlaf . Four months later he also won the bronze medal with the professionals at the World Cup in Austria and was the best scorer of the Russian national team.

Washington Capitals (since 2005)

Ovechkin after being appointed team captain in January 2010

In the fall of 2005, Ovechkin finally went into his first NHL season for the Washington Capitals and scored two goals in his second game. During the season, he received the Best Rookie of the Month award in December 2005 and January 2006, and scored the first hat trick of his NHL career on January 13, 2006 . In February 2006 Ovechkin was in the squad of the Russian national team for the Winter Olympics in Turin , which they finished in fourth place, where Ovechkin had scored five goals in the course of the tournament and was elected to the All-Star team. After the Winter Olympics, the NHL season continued, but ended for the Washington Capitals without a Playoff participation . Ovechkin was in third place in the scorer ranking with 106 points and was the third top scorer in the league with 52 goals. For his good performance, he was eventually elected to the NHL First All-Star Team and awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best rookie of the season, which he prevailed against Sidney Crosby . He was also nominated for the Lester B. Pearson Award for best player in the NHL. In May 2006 he played again for the Russian national team at the World Cup , but failed in the quarterfinals.

The 2006/07 season promised little improvement for the Washington Capitals. After a good start to the season, for which he was rewarded with his first participation in the NHL All-Star Game, Ovechkin was missing the constancy in the second half of the season and the Capitals again missed the playoffs. Ovechkin finished the season with 92 points and 46 goals, placing him fourth on the scorers list, and was also re-elected to the NHL First All-Star Team. Following the NHL season, he won the bronze medal at the World Cup in Russia .

In the 2007/08 season Ovechkin was invited to the NHL All-Star Game for the second time , after he had already scored 30 goals halfway through the season and on December 29, 2007 in an 8: 6 win over the Ottawa Senators for the first Scored four goals and five points in one game. Despite Ovechkin's good performance, the Washington Capitals were again significantly behind in the race for the playoff places, which fueled rumors that he could switch to a more competitive team after his contract expired in the summer of 2008. But on January 11, 2008, the Capitals announced that they had agreed a 13-year contract with Ovechkin and the record sum of 124 million US dollars. In the further course of the season he fought a duel with his compatriot Yevgeny Malkin for first place in the scorer ranking. On March 18th he reached the mark of 100 scorer points for the second time in his career with an assist and only three days later, on March 21st, he succeeded with a hit against the Atlanta Thrashers as the first player since Mario Lemieux and Jaromír Jágr To score 60 goals in one season in the 1995/96 season. On April 3, it went down in the history books again. After scoring two goals against Tampa Bay, he is considered the left winger with the most goals scored in a season, breaking Luc Robitaille's record .

Ovechkin during the 2012 lockout

On January 5, 2010, Ovechkin was named captain of the Washington Capitals. He finished the 2009/10 season with 109 points. In the play-offs Ovechkin failed again prematurely with the Capitals, this time in the first round against the Montréal Canadiens . This enabled him to take part in the World Cup in Germany , where he and his team only had to admit defeat in the Czech Republic final. He also won the Lester B. Pearson Award for the third time in a row , which has been given under the name Ted Lindsay Award since the 2010 season . In the 2010/11 season Ovechkin and his team took part in the 2011 NHL Winter Classic against the Penguins, but could not mark a scorer point in the 3-1 win of the Capitals . In March 2011, the Russian scored the 600th scorer point of his NHL career in the game against the Edmonton Oilers , before he also scored his 300th goal in the NHL a month later. After Ovechkin was banned from the league in January 2012 due to a check against his opponent Zbyněk Michálek for three games, he decided not to take part in the NHL All-Star Game despite being nominated , as he would feel undeserved because of the suspension.

After two seasons with rather low offensive statistics, Ovetschkin was able to build on earlier performances in the 2012/13 season, which was shortened by the lockout , and was the top goalscorer in the league with 32 goals after the end of the season, which he received for the third time the Maurice Richard Trophy . In the 2013/14 season he scored the 400th goal of his NHL career in December 2013 when he played against the Carolina Hurricanes . Paradoxically, the attacker ended the season with a plus / minus statistic of −35, although he was again awarded the Maurice Richard Trophy as top scorer with 51 goals. At the beginning of the 2014/15 season , Ovechkin overtook former record holder Peter Bondra with his 826th scorer point in the game against the Calgary Flames , making him the player with the highest points in the history of the Washington Capitals. He ended the season with 53 goals, securing himself for the third time in a row and for the fifth time in total the Maurice Richard Trophy as the most dangerous player in the NHL.

In November 2015, with his 484th NHL goal, he overtook previous record holder Sergei Fedorow as the most successful Russian goal scorer in the history of the league and three months later in the game against the Ottawa Senators he reached the record of 500 NHL goals in his career to date. He succeeded in his 801st game, making him the fifth fastest player in NHL history to hit the 500 mark; only Wayne Gretzky , Mario Lemieux , Mike Bossy and Brett Hull needed fewer games . At the end of the 2015/16 season, he scored a total of 50 goals and won the fourth Maurice Richard Trophy in a row and the sixth overall.

Ovechkin 2018 during the Eastern Conference Finals

On January 11, 2017, he scored two goals for the Capitals against the Pittsburgh Penguins in his 880th NHL game, becoming the 84th player ever and the third Russian in the history of the NHL to reach 1000 points . In November 2017, he scored the twentieth hat-trick of his NHL career to date in a 4-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs . In addition, the Russian played his 1000th game in the NHL in April 2018 and won his seventh Maurice Richard Trophy a little later.

In the following playoffs in 2018 , Ovechkin won the first Stanley Cup in franchise history with the Capitals . He was the top scorer of the playoffs with 15 goals and subsequently received the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of this post-season , whereby he was only the second left winger (after Bob Gainey ; 1979 ) to receive this honor. He also became the first Russian and third European after Nicklas Lidström (2008) and Zdeno Chára (2011), who led his team to the Stanley Cup victory as captain.

In March 2019, Ovechkin recorded his 1200th scorer point in the regular NHL season. A little later, he finished the season with 51 goals, which earned him his eighth Maurice Richard Trophy. The ninth followed in the shortened 2019/20 season , where he scored 48 goals and shared the trophy with David Pastrňák .
