Hector "Toe" Blake , CM (born August 21, 1912 in Victoria Mines , Ontario ; † May 17, 1993 in Montreal , Québec ) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach who worked for the Montreal Maroons and Montréal Canadiens from 1935 to 1948 in played the National Hockey League .

Career

Toe Blake grew up in a poor family. His father worked in a nickel mine and, in addition to Toe, had 10 siblings to look after. At the age of 23 he formed the "Punch Line" with Maurice Richard and Elmer Lach in the Canadiens . His path to the top scorer ended in 1948 with 527 points, 21 from the previous record after a broken leg. By then he had won the Stanley Cup three times with the Canadiens . In 1955 he returned as a coach of the Montreal Canadiens and won the Stanley Cup eight times until his retirement in 1968. As the coach of the Canadiens, he was in the team's 914 NHL games and in 1968 reached the mark of 500 wins as the second coach after Dick Irvin .

In 1966 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame . In 1982 he was accepted as a member of the Order of Canada .
