Anže Kopitar (born August 24, 1987 in Jesenice , SR Slovenia ) is a Slovenian ice hockey player . The center has been under contract with the Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League since 2006 , who had selected him in eleventh position in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft . With the team he has been captain since 2016 , he won the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014 . In addition, Kopitar was twice honored with the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the best defensive striker in the NHL and with the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy as a fair sportsman. At the international level, he represented Slovenia at the 2014 Winter Olympics, among others . His father Matjaž Kopitar was also a professional ice hockey player and is now a coach. His brother, Gašper Kopitar, is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Kopitar learned to play ice hockey in Slovenia at HD mladi Jesenice , for whom he played in the Slovenian junior league between 2002 and 2004. At the same time, he was in the men's team of the partner team HK HIT Casino Kranjska Gora in the Slovenian ice hockey league , the Državno Prvenstvo . In 2004, at the age of 17, he decided to move to Sweden, where he initially played for the Södertälje SK juniors . At the end of the 2004/05 season he also made his debut for the men's team of the same club in the Elitserien . Because of the performances shown, the scouts from North America also became aware of him, so that Kopitar was selected as the first European in the NHL Entry Draft 2005 by the Los Angeles Kings . In the summer of 2005 Kopitar took part in a rookie training camp for the Kings, but decided to stay in Sweden. A short time later he was also selected in the import draft of the Canadian Hockey League , but decided again to stay with Södertälje SK.
At the beginning of the 2006/07 season he made his debut in the NHL, becoming the first Slovenian NHL player. In his rookie season with Los Angeles, he reached 61 scorer points in 72 games, including 20 goals and 41 assists. This made him the third best rookie in the entire NHL on points. His 20:32 minutes ice time per game was the best of any striker for the Los Angeles Kings. In the following two seasons he established himself within the league and developed into a leading player in the Kings, so that he was elected assistant captain of his team in the 2009/10 season . On March 26, 2011 Kopitar suffered a broken ankle in a game against the Colorado Avalanche , which excluded him from playing for the remainder of the 2010/11 season .
Anže Kopitar plays inline hockey during the summer break . Between 2005 and 2007 he played a few games for the inline hockey club from Kranjska Gora . He spent the lockout of the 2012/13 season at Mora IK in Sweden.
After winning the Stanley Cup with the Kings in 2012 and 2014 , he was named the 14th team captain in franchise history in June 2016. In the same month he was awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy as best defensive striker and the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for exemplary behavior and high sporting standard for the past season . In the 2017/18 season he achieved his best career performance to date with 92 scorer points from 82 games and at the same time reached the mark of over 1.0 points per game for the first time. He was then honored with his second Frank J. Selke Trophy and was also nominated with Taylor Hall and Nathan MacKinnon for the Hart Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player in the league, which Hall won as a result.
In April 2019 Kopitar played the 1000th NHL game of the regular season.
International
For Slovenia , Kopitar took part in the junior division of the U18 Junior B World Championships in 2003 , 2004 and 2005 and the U20 Junior B World Championships in 2004 , 2005 and 2006 . In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the 2007 B World Championships and the 2005 , 2006 and 2008 A World Championships .
