John Paul "Johnny" Bucyk (born May 12, 1935 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played 1664 games for the Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League in the course of his active career between 1952 and 1978 on the position of the left winger . Bucyk, who was team captain of the Boston Bruins in two terms , won the Stanley Cup with the team in 1970 and 1972 . He also received numerous individual awards, which were crowned by his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981.

Career

Bucyk grew up in the poorest of circumstances in Edmonton . Since he did not begin to skate until he was 13, his teammates were superior to him in terms of skating, but the young athletic Johnny stood out from the crowd with his tremendously strong will. After two years in Detroit, the Red Wings wanted to bring Terry Sawchuk back from Boston and traded him for Bucyk.

In Boston he played together with his friends from the youth Bronco Horvath and Vic Stasiuk in the "Uke Line" , which was called because of its Ukrainian vote. Johnny was considered a "tough dog" in a less successful team. When Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr made the Boston Bruins one of the top teams in the league in 1967, his style no longer fitted the team. When he was over 30, Bucyk changed the way he played and became a fair top scorer. He won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy twice . At the age of 32, he scored over 30 goals for the first time in one season and topped that mark six more times. He won the Stanley Cup twice with the Bruins . After his 21 years in Boston, his number 9 is no longer used by the Bruins.

In 1981 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
