"Fats", as he was called because of his round face, played in Detroit in the position of center and left winger for 22 full seasons, as well as parts of two other seasons. Players he played in a line with included Ted Lindsay and Gordie Howe . He was considered a gentleman in ice hockey and won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy three times , which is awarded to players who combine fairness and playful class. There were also two appointments to the NHL Second All-Star Team ; once as a left winger and once as a center, making him only the third player after Sid Abel and Dit Clapper to receive Allstar awards in two different positions.

From December 1956 to November 1964 he set a team record with 548 games played in a row. In his entire career he was missing a total of only 43 games, 22 of them in the 1956/57 season alone . In 1962 he was named team captain of the Red Wings and held the post for twelve years. Only Steve Yzerman was captain longer in the history of the Red Wings .

Alex Delvecchio retired in 1973 and was only the second player in league history to play for a single team for over 20 years. For his services to ice hockey in the USA and the NHL, he received the Lester Patrick Trophy in 1974 . Shortly after saying goodbye to ice hockey, he took over the position of coach of the Red Wings, which he held for two years before working as the team's general manager until 1977. In the same year he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame .

In 1991 the Detroit Red Wings hung a banner with his number 10 on the ceiling of the Joe Louis Arena in Delvecchio's honor . The number will no longer be given to any player.
