The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1955 began on March 22, 1955 and ended on April 14, 1955 with the Detroit Red Wings' 4-3 victory over the Canadiens de Montréal . The Red Wings won their seventh title, the second in a row and the fourth in the last six years. They had already defeated the Canadiens 4-3 in the previous year, while this success also marked the last one until 1997 . In addition, they put in Gordie Howe the top scorer of these playoffs, who set a new NHL record with 20 points scored (previously Toe Blake , 18 points, playoffs 1944 ). The Canadiens meanwhile contested their fifth final in a row, but suffered their fourth defeat. In addition, for the first time in NHL history, all encounters in the finals were decided with home wins, which until today (as of playoffs 2020) only happened again in 1965 and 2003 .

mode

The four best teams in the league qualified for the playoffs. In the semi-finals, the first and third as well as the second and fourth of the final table faced each other. The respective winners then contested the Stanley Cup final.

All series were held in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needed four wins to advance. The higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.

Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
