The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1985 began on April 10, 1985 and ended on May 30, 1985 with the Edmonton Oilers ' 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers . The Oilers thus defended their title from the previous year and won their second Stanley Cup in franchise history . In addition, they had the top scorer and the Most Valuable Player of the post-season, which was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy , in the person of team captain Wayne Gretzky . The defeated Flyers, however, had to accept their third consecutive defeat in the final after 1976 and 1980.

In the 1985 playoffs, the Edmonton Oilers set or set a large number of records, so Gretzky's 47 scorer points are as unmatched as his plus / minus statistics of +27 to this day (as of playoffs 2019) . The same applies to Paul Coffey and his twelve goals, 25 assists and 37 points among all defenders. Meanwhile, Jari Kurri set the 1976 record of 19 goals set by Reggie Leach in the Flyers' jersey. Furthermore, no team in playoff history scored more goals (98) or goals per game (5.44) than Edmonton this year.

mode

After the four teams with the best points from each division have qualified, the playoffs , which are held in the knockout system , start . The respective first meets the fourth and the second meets the third of each division, so that the division winners are played out in the first two rounds. These then compete in the conference finals for entry into the Stanley Cup finals.

The series of the first round are played in the best-of-five mode, the series of all subsequent rounds in the best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to progress from the second round; in the first round three. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. In the Stanley Cup finals of the playoffs in 1984 and 1985, however, this 2-2-1-1-1 mode was deviated from and instead played according to a 2-3-2 rhythm. The winner of the Prince of Wales Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Campbell Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

In the case of games that remain a draw after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows . It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
