The playoffs for the Stanley Cup the year 1997 began on 16 April 1997 and ended on 7 June 1997 with the 4: 0 win the Detroit Red Wings over the Philadelphia Flyers . The Red Wings, with their goalkeeper Mike Vernon to the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player of the post-season presented, thus won their eighth title of the franchise credit history, but the first since 1955 . In addition, the success meant for two players from Detroit's Russian Five , Vyacheslav Fetissov and Igor Larionov , acceptance into the Triple Gold Club . The defeated Philadelphia Flyers, who had the top scorer of the playoffs in their ranks in Eric Lindros , were in their seventh Stanley Cup final and suffered their fifth defeat in a row.

The Boston Bruins missed the post-season for the first time since 1967 , bringing the longest streak in league history of 29 consecutive playoff appearances to an end.

mode

After the two division winners from each conference as well as the six other teams with the highest points in the conference have qualified, the playoffs , which are held in the knockout system , start . The division winner with the best points meets the eighth and thus the worst qualified team, number 2 of this ranking list meets number 7, etc. This mode allows one or more qualified teams to have more points than one of the division winners. The same principle is used to determine the matches in the second playoff round.

Each conference then plays its winner in the conference quarter-finals, conference semifinals and conference finals, who then compete in the final for the Stanley Cup . All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Eastern Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Western Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

In the case of games that remain a draw after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows . It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .

Stanley Cup winner

The Stanley Cup winner Detroit Red Wings traditionally had a total of 51 people, including 25 players and some officials, including the coaching staff and management, engraved on the base of the trophy. Assistant coaches Dave Lewis , Barry Smith and Mike Krushelnyski as well as Scout Mark Howe were among the officials . For the players, the rule is that they should have played either 41 games for the team in the regular season or one game in the final series. Kevin Hodson was only in the Red Wings squad in 20 games and only made six appearances, but was still taken into account as exceptions are possible. 86-year-old Wally Crossman, who took care of the Wings equipment, was the oldest person to be immortalized on the Cup by then.

The 25 players in Detroit are made up of three goalkeepers, seven defenders and 15 attackers. There were eight Europeans in the Red Wings squad , more than ever before for a Stanley Cup winner.
