Igor Nikolajewitsch Larionow ( Russian Игорь Николаевич Ларионов ; born December 3, 1960 in Voskressensk , Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian ice hockey player . He is considered to be one of the best players of all time.

With the defender Vyacheslav Fetissov he was one of the first Soviet players in the National Hockey League and was thus able to contribute to loosening the boundaries within the ice hockey scene. Larionow is one of the best passing players of all time. In 1982 he was named Honored Master of Sport , and in 2008 he was inducted into the American Hockey Hall of Fame . His gaming intelligence as well as his shrewdness away from the ice earned him the nickname Professor .

Career

Larionow began his career in 1977 with Chimik Voskressensk . After Nikolai Epstein discovered his talent, he moved to the HK CSKA Moscow military club in 1981 to form a series of storms with Sergei Makarov and Vladimir Krutov , which would later go down in the annals of ice hockey as the legendary KLM series . Larionov stayed in Moscow until 1989.

Igor Larionov played in the Legends Classic in 2008, in the context of this game he was honored for induction into the Hall of Fame

After the fall of the Iron Curtain , Larionov moved to North America . There he signed the Vancouver Canucks , who had already secured the transfer rights in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft . However, the Russian could not make friends with the North American ice hockey style and left the NHL in 1992.

While the center kept fit in Switzerland at HC Lugano in the 1992/93 season , the San Jose Sharks secured the rights to Larionow. Nevertheless, he did not return to the USA for the time being . Only when the Sharks signed Sergei Makarow, one of his best strike partners from the Hartford Whalers , did he return in 1993 and lead the young franchise into the playoffs for the first time . Together with Makarow and Johan Garpenlöv , he formed the team's so-called OV series . After Garpenlöv and Makarow left the team in 1995, the then 36-year-old player moved to the Detroit Red Wings , where he played until 2003, with a short stopover with the Florida Panthers in 2000. With the Red Wings he won the Stanley Cup three times in 1997 , 1998 as part of the Russian Five and 2002 . He let his career end from 2003 to 2004 with the New Jersey Devils .

He played mainly in the position of a center .

International

With the Soviet national team he was able to win two gold medals ( 1984 , 1988 ) and one bronze medal ( 2002 ) at the Olympic Winter Games . At the ice hockey world championships he was able to achieve first place four times ( 1982 , 1983 , 1986 , 1989 ) and once each second ( 1987 ) and third place ( 1985 ).
