Johan Kjell Garpenlöv (born March 21, 1968 in Stockholm ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player and current - coach and - functional . During his career he played for Djurgårdens IF in the Swedish Elitserien and the Detroit Red Wings , San Jose Sharks , Florida Panthers and Atlanta Thrashers in the National Hockey League on the left wing .
Career
Club career
Garpenlöv first played for two years in the Swedish second division at Nacka HK , before moving to Djurgårdens IF in the 1986/87 season. He had previously been selected in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings in the fifth round in 85th place.
After four years at Djurgårdens, the Red Wings brought him to the National Hockey League at the beginning of the 1990/91 season . In his rookie season, he scored four goals in the game against the St. Louis Blues . During the 1991/92 season played Garpenlöv both the Red Wings, and in their AHL - farm team . In March 1992 he was given for Bob McGill and an eight-round suffrage in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft to the San Jose Sharks . There he formed the so-called OV series with the two Russian stars Igor Larionow and Sergei Makarow . The Swede stayed in Northern California until the 1994/95 season and had his best NHL season there in 1992/93 with a total of 66 points.
In March 1995, San Jose gave him to the Florida Panthers , with whom he reached the final of the Stanley Cup in the 1995/96 season . In the summer of 1999 he had to leave the Panthers after four years because he was selected in the NHL Expansion Draft by the Atlanta Thrashers . After a year with the Thrashers, Garpenlöv went back to his Swedish homeland and played another season with Djurgårdens IF.
After finishing his active career, the Swede worked as an assistant coach at Djurgårdens IF from 2002 to 2005, while he was active in the same position for the Swedish national team at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey . Since the 2010/11 season Garpenlöv has been the assistant general manager of the Swedish selection.
International
In addition to various appearances at world and European championships in the Swedish junior selection teams, Garpenlöv played for the Swedish national ice hockey team at the 1992 World Cup and the 1996 World Cup of Hockey .
