The Adirondack Red Wings were an American ice hockey team from Glens Falls , New York that played in the American Hockey League from 1979 to 1999 . The franchise at that time was the Detroit Red Wings farm team from the NHL . The Red Wings played their home games at the Glens Falls Civic Center .
history
In 1979, the Detroit Red Wings revived their former AHL farm team, the Virginia Wings , after they had stopped playing four years earlier. In Glens case, the franchise has now been settled in the state of New York, just like the Virginia Wings and their predecessor team, the Tidewater Wings, before the team received the logo of the cooperation partner from the NHL.
In 1981, the Adirondack Red Wings won the Calder Cup , the championship of the AHL for the first time in their history , after beating the Maine Mariners 4-2 games in the final. In 1986, 1989 and 1992 the Red Wings were able to repeat this success, which was mainly due to the fact that the Red Wings roster was one of the most stable in the league and thus players were in the roster for many years without being used by Detroit in the NHL become. In 1999 the game was stopped, the AHL starting place for the Red Wings was given to the Adirondack IceHawks , a former UHL team.
