Gregory Steven Stefan (born February 11, 1961 in Brantford , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and currently assistant coach for the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League . As a player, he was active for the Detroit Red Wings between 1981 and 1990 .

Career

Greg Stefan began his career in 1978 in the Canadian Junior League OHL with the Oshawa Generals . He was only number two in the Generals' goal for two years, but eventually came out on top in his third season with a solid 23 wins in 46 games for the NHL . In the 1981 NHL Entry Draft , the Detroit Red Wings selected him in the seventh round at position 128 and played the 1981/82 season mainly with the Adirondack Red Wings , the Detroit farm team in the AHL . But he was also used twice for Detroit in the same season.

In the 1982/83 season , Stefan was a permanent member of the Red Wings NHL squad and shared the appearances in goal with Corrado Micalef and Gilles Gilbert before he became a regular goalkeeper the following year and returned to the playoffs with the team for the first time since 1978 could move in. They also reached the final round in 1985, but Stefan caused the negative climax of the first-round defeat against the Chicago Blackhawks when he hit opponent Greg Smith with his racket and was suspended for eight games, which he received at the beginning of the 1985 / 86 had to serve.

Eight months later, in December 1985, Stefan was again banned from the NHL because he had again illegally used his racket against an opponent. In general, the whole season was disappointing for the Red Wings and they missed the playoffs and Stefan only made 37 appearances because he sustained two injuries in addition to the 14 games suspension.

In the following years Stefan and Glen Hanlon formed the goalkeeper team of the Red Wings and they reached the finals of the Clarence Campbell Conference in 1987 and 1988, but both times defeated the Edmonton Oilers and Stefan's childhood friend and superstar Wayne Gretzky .

On November 27, 1989, Greg Stefan tore a ligament in his right knee during a game against the Oilers. Although he was back on the ice with the Adirondack Red Wings in January 1990 to gain game practice, he had to undergo an operation on his knee in March. His planned comeback at the Detroit Red Wings training camp in September he had to postpone due to another knee operation and was only able to join the Adirondack Red Wings squad in February 1991. However, in his second game in the AHL, he injured the ligaments in his left knee. Another operation would have been necessary for Stefan's fitness to play, but he decided against the operation and ended his career shortly afterwards.

After the end of his active career, Stefan worked in a sports management company before he was appointed assistant coach of the Detroit Junior Red Wings from the OHL junior league in 1993. In 1995 the team won the playoffs and took part in the Memorial Cup finals. He stayed with the team until 1998, when they had already renamed the Plymouth Whalers , and then devoted himself to golf .

In 2003, Stefan returned to the Plymouth Whalers, where he became an assistant coach and director of player development. Two years later he joined the Carolina Hurricanes from the NHL as a goalkeeping coach and scout and was able to celebrate the Stanley Cup triumph at the end of the 2005/06 season .
