NHL Entry Draft
|
The NHL Entry Draft 1981 took place on June 10, 1981 in the Forum de Montréal in Montréal in the Canadian province of Québec . In the 19th edition of the NHL Entry Draft , the teams of the National Hockey League (NHL) selected a total of 211 players in eleven rounds. The Canadian center Dale Hawerchuk was considered by the Winnipeg Jets as the first overall draft pick . Doug Smith for the Los Angeles Kings and Bobby Carpenter for the Washington Capitals followed in second and third . The order of the draft resulted from the reversed final table of the past season 1980/81 .
The Entry Draft 1981 was marked by a significantly increased number of players from Europe compared to the previous year , including two Germans again after 1978 with Dieter Hegen and Uli Hiemer . In addition, significantly more players from the lower Canadian junior leagues and the high school sector were taken into account, while obligations from the college sector fell by almost half. Meanwhile, Grant Fuhr became the first black player in NHL history to be elected in the first round, who would later be elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame as well as Dale Hawerchuk, Ron Francis , Al MacInnis and Chris Chelios . Other well-known actors of this year are James Patrick , Tony Tanti , Mike Vernon , John Vanbiesbrouck , Bruce Driver and Gaétan Duchesne .
Special Czechoslovakian Entry Draft
In the run-up to the Entry Draft, a special draft for players from Czechoslovakia had already taken place on May 28th . Here, in the event that they were allowed to move to North America, the rights were granted to four players. These were Ivan Hlinka (chosen by the Winnipeg Jets ), Bohuslav Ebermann ( Detroit Red Wings ), Jiří Bubla ( Colorado Rockies ) and Vladimír Martinec ( Hartford Whalers ).
After Hlinka refused to move to Winnipeg because he did not want to play as the only Czechoslovakian there, he signed a contract with the Vancouver Canucks with Bubla . This led to a dispute between the two franchises . While NHL President John Ziegler legitimized the concluded contracts, Alan Eagleson threatened as chairman of the National Hockey League Players 'Association , the players' union, with countermeasures. The two players subsequently announced that they would play again in Europe if their contracts were not recognized, after which the teams agreed to an equalization. Vancouver gave Brent Ashton and a four-round vote in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft to Winnipeg, which in turn sent Lucien DeBlois and a draft right to Colorado in the third round of the same year.
