Richard Costello (born June 27, 1963 in Framingham , Massachusetts ) is a former American ice hockey player who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League from 1981 to 1991 .

Career

Rich Costello began his career as a hockey player at Providence College , which he attended from 1981 to 1983, while he played parallel for the ice hockey team in the ECAC hockey . As a junior player, he was selected in the second round of the 1981 NHL Entry Draft as the 37th player in total by the Philadelphia Flyers . This gave his transfer rights, however, on January 20, 1982 together with a second round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 1982 in exchange for Darryl Sittler to the Toronto Maple Leafs . For the Toronto Maple Leafs he made his debut in the National Hockey League towards the end of the 1983/84 season , after he had previously participated with the US Olympic team in preparation for the 1984 Winter Games, but had not made it into the final squad. For the Maple Leafs, he was ten games on the ice in his rookie year , scoring two goals and one assist. Mostly, however, he was used for their farm team St. Catharines Saints in the American Hockey League . With the Saints he was a regular player in the following two years and he came only to two more inserts in the NHL for Toronto in the 1985/86 season , in which he prepared a goal. In the 1986/87 season the center ran for Toronto's new AHL farm team Newmarket Saints .

The 1987/88 season began Costello with the Utica Devils in the AHL, but completed only three games for the team. He then went to Europe, where he spent the rest of the season at SaiPa Lappeenranta from the I-divisioona , the second Finnish division. There he was able to convince with 21 scorer points in 26 games, whereupon the American was obliged for the 1988/89 season by the Schwenninger ERC from the ice hockey Bundesliga . For the SERC he was only on the ice in eleven games, but was able to score six goals and eight assists in these. The 1989/90 season he began at EC Ratingen in the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga , where he contributed 56 points in 29 games. However, he finished the season even with the HC Davos of the Swiss National League B . With Davos he was relegated to the third Swiss division. For the 1990/91 season , the attacker returned to North America and joined the Albany Choppers from the International Hockey League . He scored one goal and three assists in nine games for the Choppers before retiring at the age of 28.
