The Newmarket Saints were a Canadian ice hockey franchise of the American Hockey League based in Newmarket , Ontario . The Saints' venue was the Ray Twinney Complex .

history

In 1986, the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League decided to relocate their farm team , the St. Catharines Saints to Newmarket , Ontario , where it was henceforth active in the AHL under the name Newmarket Saints. The Newmarket Saints reached in their five-year existence only in a single season the playoffs for the Calder Cup , in which they failed in the 1988/89 season in the first round with 1: 4 wins at the Adirondack Red Wings . In 1991, the Newmarket Saints were finally relocated to St. John's , Newfoundland , where they were now active as St. John's Maple Leafs in the AHL.

The void left by the departure of the Saints in Newmarket was then filled by the Newmarket Royals from the Ontario Hockey League (1991-1994).
