The San Jose Barracuda ( IPA : [ˌsænhoʊˈzeɪ ˌbæɹəˈkuːdə] ) are an American ice hockey franchise from San José in the US state of California . The team has played in the American Hockey League (AHL) since the 2015/16 season and acts as the farm team of the San Jose Sharks from the National Hockey League . The franchise was founded in 1996 under the name Kentucky Thoroughblades and has been cooperating with the Sharks ever since. The move to California marks the third in 20-year franchise history, having served as both the Cleveland Barons and Worcester Sharks .

history

In January 2015, the American Hockey League announced an extensive restructuring for the 2015/16 season , as part of which a new Pacific Division was founded and five teams relocated to the state of California . One of those five teams was the Worcester Sharks , who moved to the same city as their National Hockey League partner , the San Jose Sharks . In addition, the Sharks announced in the same month that both teams would play in the same arena, the SAP Center .

In April 2015, the new name of the franchise, San Jose Barracuda, was revealed. The term Barracuda comes from the main sponsor , Barracuda Networks , whose logo can be seen also in the team logo, and also offers thematic proximity to the "Sharks" ( German  sharks ). Roy Sommer , who was previously behind the gang for the Worcester Sharks, has been named the San Jose Barracuda's first head coach.

In the very first season , the team qualified fourth in the new Pacific Division for the play-offs for the Calder Cup . There the Barracuda failed in the first round to the Ontario Reign . Although the early elimination from the play-offs, the team developed positively in the following season . With a number of young and talented players, San Jose finished the regular season as best team in the division and Western Conference. Only the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins had a higher percentage of victory than the Barracuda. The Barracuda finally reached the semi-finals of the play-offs for the Calder Cup, where they failed at the eventual winner, the Grand Rapids Griffins . However, the season was sweetened by numerous individual awards. So was Daniel O'Regan , the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award as the best league newcomer Troy Grosenick was named best goalkeeper with the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award excellent and coach Roy Sommer won for the first time in his career the Louis AR Pieri Memorial Award .

In the 2017/18 season , the team was unable to build on the successes of the previous season and stayed in the bottom third of the table for a long time before, in February 2018 - when team captain John McCarthy took part in the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang with the United States' national ice hockey team - all play-offs - Hopes were nearly buried by just one victory. An unprecedented race to catch up at the end of the season, when the team caught up ten points behind the San Diego Gulls in six games in twelve days , achieved the third consecutive play-off qualification. There the team lost to the Tucson Roadrunners in the first round .

Venues

The San Jose Barracuda have been playing in the local SAP Center since they settled in San Jose , a multifunctional arena that can hold 17,562 spectators and was completed in 1993 . The hall is jokingly called "Shark Tank" ( German  shark tank ). After completion of the construction phase, the arena was named San Jose Arena , after the conclusion of a sponsorship agreement with Compaq in 2001, the name changed to Compaq Center . When Compaq was taken over by Hewlett-Packard in 2003, it was named HP Pavilion. In 2013 the arena was renamed the SAP Center. The German software company SAP holds the naming rights for the arena for five years and pays 3.35 million US dollars annually.

For the AHL games, the upper tier of the arena will be removed, reducing the capacity to 8,072 seats.

Audience numbers

Like most of the relatively young AHL franchises, the San Jose Barracuda suffer from a lack of audience participation. In addition, there is a generally large range of sports entertainment options in the region around Silicon Valley . These include the San Jose Sharks from the National Hockey League, a higher-class ice hockey franchise, the Golden State Warriors from the National Basketball Association , the Oakland Athletics from Major League Baseball and the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders from the National Football League .

In the first year of the start of the AHL game operations in San Jose, an average of 4,432 spectators attended the team's games, which means that the team found itself in the lower league quarter. By comparison, the average of the league croesus Hershey Bears is almost 10,000 viewers.

Owners and farm teams

Since its inception, the San Jose Barracuda have been owned by a group of local investors, the San Jose Sports & Entertainment Enterprises (SJSEE). The group has been running the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League since February 26, 2002 . In addition to the NHL team and the San Jose Barracuda, the investor group also operates the SAP Center and the two training halls of the team from San Jose. It is also owned by the San Jose Stealth , the city's professional lacrosse team , and owned by the Worcester Sharks before the team moved to San Jose , and the Cleveland Barons before the team moved to Worcester . The group's president and chief executive officer (CEO) is Greg Jamison , who has been with the San Jose Sharks organization since 1993.

The San Jose Barracuda have been the farm team of the San Jose Sharks from the National Hockey League since the game began . With the inclusion of the three predecessor franchises, the San Jose Sharks have been in cooperation with the “basic structure” of the AHL club since 1996. The San Jose Barracuda themselves also work with teams from the ECHL , whose selection is subject to the management of the San Jose Sharks, which in turn works closely with that of the Barracuda. In the 2015/16 premiere season, the Allen Americans acted as a cooperation partner. The Worcester Sharks had already worked with the newly formed team in Allen in the preseason. The collaboration with the Americans ended after the 2017/18 season.
