Ben Smith was born in Winston-Salem , but grew up in Avon , Connecticut . With the ice hockey Smith began however in about 175 distant Boston with the Boston Junior Bruins and the Boston Little Bruins . From summer 2006 he attended Boston College and played parallel for their ice hockey team, the Eagles , in the Hockey East Association, a college sports league. In the freshman year, he led the team with 18 points in 42 games and was therefore elected to the league's All-Academic Team and honored with the Bernie Burke Outstanding Freshman Award , which is given to the best player in the first year of college. In the next year, which he spent on the ice next to Nathan Gerbe , he scored 50 points in 44 games as the center of the front row, which meant he was called back to the All-Academic Team . In addition, at the end of the season, the championship of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) was won, to the finals of which Boston qualified by placing in the Hockey East. In the final, the team defeated the University of Notre Dame 4-1; Smith get a goal and an assist.

The 2007/08 season was followed by the 2008 NHL Entry Draft , in which he was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in 169th position. For the time being, however, he stayed with his college team. The following season 2008/09 was rather disappointing, both team and personally. It was not until his senior year that Smith improved again and scored 37 points in 42 games in which he led the team as assistant captain. In addition, the team again won the NCAA championship; in the final she defeated the University of Wisconsin – Madison 5-0. Smith was named Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player , with the trophy that teammate Nathan Gerbe had received when winning the title two years earlier . In addition, after his last season in Boston, he received the Len Ceglarski Award for outstanding sportsmanship, which is awarded after an election among all head coaches of the Hockey East.

Chicago Blackhawks

Following his college years, he was signed by the Rockford IceHogs , the Blackhawks' farm team , in the spring of 2010 and played three more games in the play-offs, in which he scored a goal. Right at the beginning of the new season , in October 2010, Smith was called up for the first time in the NHL squad and made his NHL debut on October 29 in the game against the Edmonton Oilers . During the season he came to twelve more NHL appearances, but played primarily for the IceHogs, with 31 points in 62 games and at the end of the season received the Rockford's Rookie of the Year Award for the best rookie of the year.

Also in the following season 2011/12 Smith switched regularly between NHL and AHL, where he came again to 13 games for the Blackhawks. At the Icehogs, however, he increased his quota significantly, as he also scored 31 points, but only needed 38 games compared to 63 from last season. After these 38 games, he had to sit out until the end of the season due to hip surgery .

After he had extended his contract in Rockford by two years in June 2012, he spent almost the entire season 2012/13 in the AHL; In the end, the Blackhawks only had two missions. One of them, however, was a game in the 2013 Stanley Cup Final , which the Blackhawks won 4-2 overall against the Boston Bruins , which also gave Smith's name an engraving on the prestigious trophy. With the beginning of the 2013/14 season Smith was able to secure a regular place in the NHL roster of the Blackhawks.

In February 2016, Smith was handed over to the Toronto Maple Leafs along with Alex Stalock and a success-based four-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft . In return, goalkeepers James Reimer and Jeremy Morin moved to the Sharks. With the Maple Leafs Smith ended the 2015/16 season, but received no additional contract. As a result, he joined the Colorado Avalanche as a free agent in August 2016 . Smith played four games for the Avalanche before being sent to the AHL via the waiver at the end of October 2016 . The Toronto Maple Leafs secured his services again. In the 2017/18 game year he led the Toronto Marlies , the Maple Leafs' farm team, as captain to win the championship in the AHL and thus to the Calder Cup .
