Moritz Seider (born April 6, 2001 in Zell (Mosel) ) is a German ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League (NHL) since July 2019 and is initially on loan for the Adler Mannheim in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) is used. The defender is considered to be one of the most promising talents in German ice hockey and was selected in sixth position by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft . In his first year as a professional, he won the German championship with the Adler Mannheim in spring 2019 and was also named DEL Rookie of the Year .

Career

Seider, who was born in Zell (Mosel) in Rhineland-Palatinate , learned to play ice hockey in the Thuringian capital Erfurt in the youth department of the EHC Erfurt . The trained defender played there until the summer of 2015. As a 12-year-old, he was part of the U16 squad in the 2013/14 season and played in the school league . There he was able to achieve more than one scorer point per game in both seasons . In a total of 43 missions, he got 57 points. The youngster's achievements soon drew the attention of the management teams of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) clubs to Seider, who finally switched to the Adler Mannheim team in the summer of 2015 . For the young eagles, he continued to play in the school league . In the two years that he continued to accumulate in this age group, he scored another 40 points in 48 games. In the course of the 2016/17 season , however, he also increasingly played in the German Youth League , where the club's U19 team was based. There, too, the 15-year-old was able to convince with 13 points in twice as many matches. At the end of the season he secured the DNL championship with the young eagles .

The game year 2017/18 spent Seider exclusively in the Under-19 squad in the DNL. In 26 games he achieved 27 points and received a professional contract with the Eagles in the DEL in April 2018. There he made his debut for the remainder of the season and played a total of four games. At the beginning of the 2018/19 season , the 17-year-old defender made it into the squad and became a regular. At the end of the regular season, he received the award for rookie of the year in the highest German ice hockey league . In the following NHL Entry Draft 2019 , the Detroit Red Wings from the National Hockey League considered him in sixth position, making him the most highly selected German after Leon Draisaitl . He was also the first German-born and trained defender to be selected in the first round of the draft. The Red Wings provided Seider with an entry-level contract in July 2019 , after which he moved to North America in the summer and at the start of the season was given a place in Detroit's farm team , the Grand Rapids Griffins , in the American Hockey League . For this he played a total of 49 games in the 2019/20 season, in which he recorded 22 scorer points. In August 2020, the Red Wings announced that Seider was returning to Mannheim on loan for the time being.

International

For his home country, Seider was on the ice in both the junior and senior classes. He completed his first international tournament with the U18 Junior World Championship of Division IA 2017 in Bled , Slovenia , which ended with a disappointing fifth place for the German team. In the same year, the defender came to his first games for the German U20 national team at the U20 World Junior Championship of Division IA 2018 in the French winter sports resorts of Courchevel and Méribel . However, the German selection also missed the targeted rise there. At the U18 Junior World Championship of Division IA 2018 in December 2017 in the Latvian capital Riga , the German team had to be content with second place behind the hosts. However, Seider was individually selected for the tournament's best defensive player. At the U20 Junior World Championship of Division IA 2019 in December 2018 in Füssen , Germany, the German U20 team managed to get promoted back to the top division. With seven scorer points, the defensive player, who acted as team captain, played a major role in this. Among other things, he was the defender with the best points and had the best plus / minus balance. In addition, he again received the award for the best defender of the tournament.

On May 7, 2019, Seider made his debut for the German senior team in a test match as part of the preparation for the 2019 World Cup against the United States . Later on, the 18-year-old became the youngest German player to take part in the world championships in Slovakia , scoring his first goal in the national shirt in the opening game against Great Britain .
