Mike Pellegrims (born April 1, 1968 in Antwerp ) is a former Belgian ice hockey player with German nationality . Since the 2018/19 season he has been assistant trainer for the Adler Mannheim in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). Before that, he worked as a trainer at Düsseldorfer EG and Klagenfurt AC and between 2010 and 2016 was under contract as assistant trainer for Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg in the DEL.

His nephew Maxime is also a Belgian international.

Career

Mike Pellegrims began his career as an ice hockey player in his Belgian homeland at Olympia Heist op den Berg , for which he was active in the Belgian Eredivisie from 1985 to 1987 and with whom he won the national championship title in his first two seasons . The defender then played for Eaters Geleen in the Dutch Eredivisie for three years . There, too, he was able to convince directly, so that he was signed for the 1990/91 season by the top team IJshockey Club Utrecht , with whom he won the Dutch championship title in his first season . Following this success he returned to Geleen and won the Dutch Cup for the first time with his team in 1993. From 1994 to 1996 he was under contract with Brest Albatros Hockey in the French Ligue Magnus and was one of the top scorers of his team in both seasons. In the 1995/96 season he became French champions with the Albatros .

After his successes in lower class European leagues, Pellegrims was signed in 1996 by Adler Mannheim from the German Ice Hockey League . With these he immediately won the German championship title three times in a row and as a regular player he was able to prove with the Adler that he could also keep up in top European ice hockey. From 1999 to 2001 he played for Mannheim's league rivals Berlin Capitals . He then moved within the DEL to the DEG Metro Stars , for whom he was on the ice for a total of five years. During this period he took part in the DEL All-Star Game three times (2002, 2004 and 2005). For the 2006/07 season , the Belgian with German nationality joined the Kassel Huskies from the 2nd Bundesliga ice hockey . With the North Hesse he succeeded in the second attempt in the 2007/08 season as a second division champion in the German ice hockey league. There he started the following season, but ended the 2008/09 season at EC KAC in the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga . In these he was a regular player in the playoffs and contributed to winning the Austrian championship with one goal and one assist in twelve playoff games . He then ended his active career.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Belgian ice hockey, he was named a member of the Belgian team of the century together with Björn Steijlen , Jef Lekens , Willy Kreitz , Bob Moris senior and Bob Moris junior in November 2008 .

For the 2009/10 season Pellegrims took over a position as head coach for the first time and led his former Dutch club Eaters Geleen in his first season behind the gang to win the national cup competition. He was then assistant coach of the Serbian national ice hockey team at the World Cup of Division I under Canadian Mark Pederson in 2010 , he was assistant coach in 2014/15 and national coach of the Dutch national ice hockey team in the 2015/16 season .

Between 2010 and 2016 Pellegrims was under contract with the Grizzlys Wolfsburg in the DEL as an assistant trainer under the German-Czech Pavel Gross .

From April 2016 to April 2017 Pellegrim was the head coach of the EC KAC , with which he was runner-up.

In April 2017, the Düsseldorfer EG announced the engagement of Pellegrims as the new head coach. At the end of January 2018, he was dismissed in Düsseldorf in a series with seven defeats from nine games. From the beginning of the 2018/19 game year, he worked as an assistant trainer at the Adler Mannheim and worked there, as in Wolfsburg, under Pavel Gross.

International

With the Belgian national team Pellegrims took part in the D World Championship in 1989 and the C World Championship in 1990 , 1992 , 1993 , 2002 and 2003 and the B World Championship in 2004 . In a total of 35 World Cup games, he scored 14 goals and provided 33 templates. At the World Championships in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2002, he was voted the best defender in the Belgian World Cup group. At the World Cup of Division II in 2003, he was both top scorer and best assists in group B.
