Career

Clubs

Björn Steijlen started his career at Eindhoven Kemphanen in the neighboring country of the Netherlands. In 1994 he went to the Griffoens Geel in his Belgian hometown , with whom he competed in the Belgian honorary division and became Belgian champion in 1996 . He then moved back to Eindhoven and now came to his first assignments in the Dutch honor division . After Eindhoven Kemphanen withdrew from the first Dutch league in 1998, Steijlen moved to Antwerp . So he left the Netherlands but not the Dutch league, in which his new club Phantoms Deurne played as the only Belgian team. But even in the Antwerp suburb of Deurne, it only kept the Wandervogel for a short time. After just one season he went back to the Netherlands and was henceforth on the ice for the Red Eagles' s-Hertogenbosch . He then played for two years in lower-class French clubs before returning to the Dutch honor division in 2003 and hired by Ruijters Eaters Geleen . When he moved to IHC Leuven in the Belgian ice hockey league in 2005 , he settled down for the first time - he stayed in the capital of Flemish Brabant for seven years . In the first year he won the Belgian Cup competition with the IHC and also reached the play-off final of the honor division, which was lost after two wins and three defeats against White Caps Turnhout . In the following year, too, he and his team had to admit defeat to the team from the province of Antwerp in the final series. In 2010 Steijlen and his team won the championship against HYC Herentals and contributed to it as the best goalkeeper in the league. When the then final opponent moved from the Belgian to the Dutch honorary division in 2012, Steijlen accepted the offer there and moved to the stronger league of the neighboring country. He ended his career there in 2014.

On the occasion of the anniversary celebrations for one hundred years of Belgian ice hockey, he was named a member of the Belgian team of the century together with Joseph Lekens , Mike Pellegrims , Willy Kreitz , Bob Moris senior and Bob Moris junior in November 2008 .

International

Steijlen was part of the Belgian national ice hockey team for the first time at the D World Championships in 1996 and 1997 , but was not used in either year. He played his first games at the D-WM 1998 . He also played at the D-WM in 1999 and 2000 . After finishing second behind Israel at the D-WM 2000, the Belgians were promoted to Division II. There he played the World Championships in 2001 , 2002 and 2003 . There, despite a 4-2 defeat against North Korea , the Belgians were promoted to Division I, as the decisive direct comparison against the Chinese was won 6-1. There the Belgians had no chance at the 2004 World Cup and had to be relegated again without any point. Steijlen himself had to accept an average of 8.03 goals per game - as many as never before at a World Cup. He then played in Division II at the 2005 , 2006 , 2007 , 2008 , 2009 , 2010 , 2011 , 2012 , 2013 and 2014 World Championships , where he was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament in 2008, 2012 and 2013. He achieved the best catch quota of a World Cup tournament in 2003, 2009, 2012 and 2013. In 2012 he was also the goalkeeper with the lowest percentage of goals conceded per game in the tournament.
