The 61st A World Championship in ice hockey was from 26 April to 14 May 1997 in the three Finnish cities Helsinki , Tampere and Turku discharged. The other tournaments took place in Poland , Estonia and Andorra . A total of 36 teams took part in the world championships, three more played in the unofficial E-World championship.
The main venue for the A group was the capital Helsinki. The Canadian national team won their 21st world title. In the final, they met the Swedish national team , which the North Americans lost 7-2 in the preliminary round. In the first final game the Swedes won 3-2, then the Canadians turned the duel, defeated the Scandinavians in the two following games and became world champions. The bronze medal went to the defending champion Czech Republic , who defeated Russia in the game for third place. As the last of the relegation round, the Norwegian national team had to go to the qualifying round for the tournament the following year .

mode
Compared to the previous year , there was an extensive mode change in the A group. The preliminary round was still played in two groups with six teams each, but then the field was divided into a final round and a relegation round with six teams each.
Since an increase in the A group from 12 to 16 teams was planned for the following World Cup , there were special promotion and relegation rules in 1997. Although the B group winner rose directly to the A group, the last of this year's A group did not relegate directly, but was given the opportunity to qualify again with the second, fourth and fifth placed in the B group to qualify for the A-WM.
The third place in the B group, Switzerland , did not take part in this qualification, but rose straight away. The reason was that the world federation generally guaranteed the host country of the A group a place in the title fights, regardless of which group the team played in before. The sixteenth place on the grid at the following World Championships - again a novelty - should be kept free for a representative from the "Far East" until 2004 . The aim was to sustainably promote ice hockey in this region. The teams from this region met in the run-up to the World Cup for a qualifying tournament, the winners of which were allowed to take part in the A-World Cup. In the following years, the C-group team Japan repeatedly managed to secure a place at the A-World Cup. The losers of the Far Eastern qualification played according to their classification at the respective world championships.
The C and D groups played with eight teams each this year. The three teams that did not qualify for the D group played an additional tournament in the Turkish capital, Ankara , which was unofficially known as the E group.

mode
The 21-day world championship tournament is divided into four phases - preliminary round, final round, relegation round and final.
The 12 teams play according to their world ranking placement initially into two groups of six teams, a preliminary round ( Preliminary Round ). Two points are awarded for a win and one point for a draw. There is no point if you lose. In the event of a tie between two teams, the direct comparison decides. If more than two teams are tied, these criteria decide:
- Number of points from matches between teams with the same points against each other
- better goal difference from the games against each other,
- Number of goals from the games against each other
- Points, goal difference and goals against the next-better, non-tied team (if possible),
- Results against the team that is better but not tied (if possible),
- Placement in the IIHF world rankings in 1996.
The three best teams in each preliminary group qualify for the final round ( Qualification Round ). The nations on the other places contest the relegation round .
In the final round, the teams from a common preliminary group do not meet again, but the results of the preliminary round games against each other are also evaluated in the intermediate round. Thus, each team plays three more tournament games in this round. The two best teams of the final round qualify for the final series ( best-of-three ), while the teams in third and fourth place play off the bronze rank.
In the relegation round, the six teams play three more games against the teams of the other group of the preliminary round, taking the preliminary round results with them. The worst team has to secure a place in the A group again in a qualifying tournament the following year.
