In addition, he won a total of four silver and one bronze medal with the Swedish national team at world championships .
Career
Andersson began his career in the youth department of the Swedish club Frölunda HC . Already at the age of 16 he played in the senior team and took part in several junior world championships in the late 1980s and early 1990s . After he finished the season with Frölunda 1988/89 from the HockeyAllsvenskan in the Elitserien had risen, he went at the age of 18 years the first time in a first-class professional league. He finally left Sweden in the summer of 1991 and made the leap to North America. There he had taken the Nordiques de Québec under contract, which had selected him in the fourth round of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft in 68th place.
First, the Nordiques used the Swedes in the American Hockey League with the Halifax Citadels , their farm team , before he was used for the first time in three NHL games with the Nordiques during the 1993/94 season . In the AHL he impressed this season with 82 points in 75 games. Nevertheless, the three missions remained his only in the NHL until the end of the 1994/95 game year . Therefore, he joined the New York Islanders as a free agent in the summer of 1995 . After initially a few missions in the International Hockey League , the winger made the leap into the NHL squad, in which he spent the rest of the 1995/96 season , as well as the entire 1996/97 season. With 43 points in 74 games, he also had his most profitable NHL year. Although his regular place, Andersson moved to the West Coast of the United States for the San Jose Sharks in the summer of 1997 , which began a period of numerous changes to various NHL franchises . After a year with the Sharks, who only used him five times in the NHL, he moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs on a free agent basis. Since they used him exclusively in the IHL in the 1998/99 season , Andersson was transferred back to the New York Islanders, where he stayed from August 1999 to January 2000 before he was put on the waiver list, from where the Nashville Predators . However, he returned to New York after just a month, as the Predators had put him on the waiver list. Finally, he finished the season with the Islanders and moved to the Calgary Flames in the summer of 2000 . With the Flames he came to only eleven missions during the 2000/01 season , which is why he returned to Europe in the summer of 2001.
Andersson moved back to his parent club in Frölunda, with which he was able to celebrate the Swedish championship in 2003 and 2005 and was runner-up in 2007. He was personally awarded the Guldhjälmen and Guldpucken at the end of the 2002/03 season . After the 2010/11 season he ended his playing career. Since 2013 he has worked as a scout for the Los Angeles Kings in the NHL .
