The 1996/97 NHL season was the 80th season in the National Hockey League . 26 teams played 82 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Detroit Red Wings after a 4-0 win in the final series against the Philadelphia Flyers .

It was the first season for the Phoenix Coyotes , the previous Winnipeg Jets , after their move. It was also the final season for the Hartford Whalers , who then moved to North Carolina to play under the Carolina Hurricanes name . The Boston Bruins ended the season with the worst record of all teams and missed the play-offs for the first time since 1967, so the longest series in league history of 29 consecutive play-offs came to an end.
