Michael Francis Dunham (born June 1, 1972 in Johnson City , New York ) is a former American ice hockey goalkeeper who is currently the goalkeeping coach for the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League .
Career
Mike Dunham was selected by the New Jersey Devils in the third round of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft (53rd overall). He then played for several years for the University of Maine and in the American Hockey League for the Albany River Rats , with which he won the Calder Cup . In 1996 he was used for the first time in the National Hockey League and won together with goalkeeper Martin Brodeur the William M. Jennings Trophy for the goalkeeper (s) with the fewest goals. In the summer of 1998 he was transferred to the Nashville Predators , where he was number one himself. In February 2002 he won the silver medal at the Winter Olympics , where he was used.
During the 2002/03 season, he went back to the East Coast when he was transferred to the New York Rangers . During the lockout in the 2004/05 season he played in Sweden for Skellefteå AIK . At the beginning of the 2005/06 season he signed a contract in the National Hockey League with the Atlanta Thrashers , but he missed the play-offs with his team .
After his contract expired, he had several offers. Since he is originally from the state of New York, where his family lives and he had already played for the Devils Rangers and New Jersey, he opted for the offer of the New York Islanders , for whom he the 2006/07 season as a baking up -Goalie denied by Rick DiPietro . If he performed very well at the beginning of the season, he could no longer convince at the end. Especially when he had to take on the role of goalkeeper because DiPietro suffered a concussion, he weakened. He lost five games in a row and conceded 24 goals.
After the season, his contract was not renewed in the summer of 2007, but he remained in the organization of the Islanders and was introduced as goalkeeping coach in September.
