Skellefteå AIK is a Swedish ice hockey club from the city of Skellefteå . The club is one of the traditional ice hockey clubs in Sweden and currently plays in the top division.

The football department of the club initially made itself independent as Skellefteå AIK FK , before changing its name to Skellefteå FF in 2006 .

history

The club was founded in 1921 and has had ice hockey in its program since 1943, which has been an independent club since 1985. Initially, the team played in a regional championship until they rose to the top division in 1955. There you could win the then existing northern group and at the end of the championship the club was in second place. Then the club developed into an "elevator team" that shuttled between the top three divisions. When the Elitserien was established as the top division in 1975, they were there, but then there was another period of fluctuations in performance.

At the beginning of 1970, the club's heyday followed with ten consecutive years in the Elitserien. The climax was the 1977/1978 season when they finished second in the preliminary round and then won the championship title in the play-off round . Three years later Skellefteå AIK came first after the preliminary round, but they later lost the semi-finals. The 1985/1986 season the club had to play in the second division and then another four years followed in the Elitserien.

In 1988 the club had to play qualifying matches against the winner of the second division. In the decisive game they won away 10: 1, so that they could stay in the top class. A year later Skellefteå AIK could not repeat this performance with the same constellation and so followed 16 years in the 2nd division. On April 5, 2006 it was time for a qualifying game again, and since this was won, the club played in the 2007/08 season in the Elitserien and came there after an 8th place in the preliminary round to the quarter-finals. After losing the final against Färjestad BK in the 2010/11 season and against Brynäs IF in the 2011/12 season, first place in the preliminary round could be achieved in the following season and in the playoffs first Brynäs IF, then Linköpings HC and im In the final, Luleå HF was defeated 4-0 games. In the 2013/14 season, the championship title was defended with a 4-0 sweep against Färjestad BK.
