Marcus Karl Gustav Pettersson (born May 8, 1996 in Skellefteå ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins from the National Hockey League since December 2018 and plays for them in the position of defender .

Career

Marcus Pettersson was born in Skellefteå and in his youth went through the junior departments of the local Skellefteå AIK . He made his debut for the club's J20 during the 2012/13 season in the J20 SuperElit , the highest-ranking junior league in Sweden, before he was in the professional squad for the first time the following year and thus celebrated his debut in the Svenska Hockeyligan (SHL). After ten SHL missions, the defender was considered in the NHL Entry Draft 2014 in 38th position by the Anaheim Ducks , but initially remained in his Swedish homeland. There he spent the 2014/15 season in the SuperElit, the SHL and on loan in the second-class Allsvenskan at HC Vita Hästen .

In June 2015, Pettersson signed an entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks, but returned to Skellefteå AIK on loan for another two seasons and established himself in their professional department. In the 2017/18 season, the Swede finally moved to North America and was initially employed by the Ducks farm team in the American Hockey League (AHL), the San Diego Gulls . After convincing performances there, he was appointed to Anaheim's squad for the first time in February 2018, so that he subsequently made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) and then established himself in the Ducks squad. Nevertheless, it was given to the Pittsburgh Penguins in early December 2018 in exchange for Daniel Sprong .

With the Penguins, Pettersson finally established himself in the NHL and therefore signed a new four-year contract in January 2020, which should bring him an average annual salary of around four million US dollars from the start of the 2020/21 season.

International

On an international level, Pettersson made his debut as part of the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2013 , where he won the gold medal with Sweden's U17 selection. He then represented his home country at the U18 World Cup in 2014 , with the defender taking fourth place with the Tre Kronor as well as two years later with the U20 national team at the U20 World Cup in 2016 .
