John Marino (born May 21, 1997 in North Easton , Massachusetts ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League since August 2019 and plays for them in the position of defender .
Career
John Marino was born in North Easton, Massachusetts, and played in his youth for the South Shore Kings in nearby Foxborough . Without playing in a well-known junior league, he was already considered in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft in 154th position by the Edmonton Oilers before moving to the United States Hockey League (USHL) for the 2015/16 season. In the highest ranking junior division in the United States, he spent a year with the Tri-City Storm and promptly won the USHL playoffs for the Clark Cup with them . He then enrolled at Harvard University and ran from then on for their ice hockey team, the Harvard Crimson , in the ECAC , a league in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The defender also celebrated winning the championship with the Crimson at the end of his first season, before leading his team the following year with a plus / minus rating of +21 and placing himself in the top 10 within the ECAC.
In July 2019, the Edmonton Oilers gave the rights to him in exchange for a six- round vote in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft to the Pittsburgh Penguins . A little later, Marino signed an entry-level contract with the Penguins and earned a place in their squad as part of the preparation for the 2019/20 season. As a result, he made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) at the beginning of October 2019 and has been there regularly since then.
