Conor Sheary (born June 8, 1992 in Winchester , Massachusetts ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins from the National Hockey League since February 2020 and plays for them in the position of left winger . He won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins in the 2016 and 2017 playoffs , before spending almost two years with the Buffalo Sabers .
Career
Conor Sheary played for the boarding school ice hockey team at Cushing Academy when he was in school . There he was one of the strongest attacking players on his team in his last two years. From 2010 to 2014 he played for the University of Massachusetts Amherst in Hockey East . In the first two years he was eliminated with his team in the first round of the Hockey East Playoffs . In the last two seasons, his team could not qualify for the playoffs. In March 2014, Sheary signed an amateur trial contract with the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League . He played two games in the regular season and 15 in the playoffs.
For the 2014/15 season Sheary received a professional contract from the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins. The season was successful for him and he was the top scorer of his team. In July 2015, Sheary received an entry level contract from the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League . He started the season initially in the AHL, but was appointed to the NHL squad in December 2015. On December 16, 2015, he made his NHL debut against the Boston Bruins . Two days later, the Penguins played again against the Bruins and Sheary he scored his first goal and booked an assist. After he was sent back to the AHL in the meantime, Sheary earned himself a regular place in the NHL squad at the end of the regular season. In the 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs , he mostly played in a row with Sidney Crosby and Patric Hörnqvist . In the Eastern Conference quarterfinals, he scored two goals against the New York Rangers and scored in the first two games of the final series against the San Jose Sharks . After six games against the Sharks, Sheary finally won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh and repeated this success the following year. After another year in Pittsburgh, Sheary was handed over to the Buffalo Sabers in June 2018 together with Matt Hunwick in exchange for a conditional four-round vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft .
Sheary was active in Buffalo for about a year and a half before returning to the Pittsburgh Penguins with Evan Rodrigues for the trade deadline in February 2020 . In return, Dominik Kahun switched to the Sabers.
