Matthew John "Matt" Hunwick (* 21st May 1985 in Warren , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey player who last until the summer of 2020 with the Buffalo Sabers of the National Hockey League was under contract on them on the position of the defender played .
Career
Matt Hunwick began his career as a hockey player in 2001 with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program , which competes in the North American Hockey League to promote young American players. From 2003, the American played for the University of Michigan ice hockey team for four years . During the NHL Entry Draft 2004 he was selected in the seventh round as a total of 224th player by the Boston Bruins . In the summer of 2007, the defender was added to the roster of the Providence Bruins , the Boston farm team from the American Hockey League . In the 2007/08 season he made his debut in professional ice hockey in the AHL , as well as on November 10, 2007 in the National Hockey League for the Boston Bruins in a home game against the Buffalo Sabers .
In November 2010 it was given to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Colby Cohen . After three years as a regular in Colorado, he was no longer part of the NHL squad at the beginning of the 2013/14 season and instead played for the farm team, the Lake Erie Monsters , in the AHL. After the 2013/14 season , he left the Avalanche after four years and joined the New York Rangers in July 2014 . There, his one-year contract was not renewed after the 2014/15 season, so he signed a new two-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs in July . Hunwick fulfilled this and joined the reigning Stanley Cup winner Pittsburgh Penguins in July 2017 . After a season in June 2018, they transferred him to the Buffalo Sabers together with Conor Sheary and received a conditional four-round vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft .
With the Sabers, however, Hunwick hardly got to play due to injury before he missed the entire 2019/20 season and his expiring contract was not extended.
