The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) was an American university and college sports league that existed from 1971 to 2013 and was primarily based in the Midwestern United States. It belonged to Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and was an all-male Hockey - Conference . The league, which was founded in 1971, played its championship annually in the second week of March at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit , Michigan . After the league was dissolved, the participants either joined the existing Western Collegiate Hockey Association , Big Ten Conference and Hockey East or joined the newly formed National Collegiate Hockey Conference .
