The National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) is an American university and college sports league , which is one of six ice hockey conferences under the umbrella organization of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The conference , consisting of eight teams, was founded in 2011 as an all-male league, but did not start playing in Division I of the NCAA until the 2013/14 season. The participants are all from the western and midwestern United States.
history
In 2011, Pennsylvania State University announced that it would participate in the NCAA game operations with an ice hockey team from 2013. This resulted in a major restructuring of the NCAA's ice hockey conference system, as Penn State was the sixth member of the Big Ten Conference to provide an ice hockey team. Six is the limit at which a new conference can be opened directly, which the remaining five members achieved with the Big Ten's ice hockey division. The Central Collegiate Hockey Association was dissolved by the Big Ten Conference, which took part in the 2013/14 season . As a result, a team from the dissolved CCHA ( Miami University ) and five from the WCHA ( Colorado College , University of Denver , University of Minnesota Duluth , University of Nebraska Omaha and University of North Dakota ) came together to hold a new conference with six teams establish. This was announced in July 2011 and the start of participation in NCAA games was also set for the 2013/14 season.
In September 2011 it was announced that St. Cloud State University and Western Michigan University would join the new NCHC, setting the number of teams participating at the start of the season at eight. Finally, in March 2013, the NCHC logo was unveiled, showing eight stars for the eight starting members and a hockey stick.
mode
Each of the eight teams plays a total of 24 season games, with 12 home and 12 away games being played. Each team plays four times (two home, two away games) against five teams and twice (either two home or two away games) against the remaining two teams. This assignment is made anew and randomly every season. After the regular season, all eight teams play the play-offs , with the best point playing against the worst point of the regular season, the second against the seventh, the third against the sixth and the fourth against the fifth. The matches are played in best-of-three mode, so that the team that has won two games first progresses. The team placed higher in the regular season has home rights, i.e. plays games 1 and 3 in front of their home crowd. The semi-finals and the final ( Final Four ) will then be played as NCHC Frozen Faceoff in one city, with only one game being played at a time. In contrast to many other competitions, the third place will also be played out.
