The Hockey East Association (HE) is an American university and college sports league based in New England . It belongs to the Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and is a pure Hockey - Conference .

Hockey East was founded as a men's league in 1984 when most of its current members left what is now the Eastern College Athletic Conference . At that time an attempt was made to imitate the Big East Conference , which had grown very rapidly within a few years. It was not until 2002 that the Hockey East women's league was founded.

mode

The participating teams initially play two double rounds during the regular season . The first in the table wins the championship of the so-called regular season . The best eight teams take part in the play-offs .

The quarter-finals will be played in the best-of-three mode, with all games taking place in the venue of the better placed. The semi-finals and finals will be played on a weekend in mid-March at the TD Garden in Boston . The first two finals in the history of Hockey East were played in Providence , Rhode Island at the Providence Civic Center , before moving to Boston in 1987.

The women's final has been held in Boston since the league was founded . First it was played in the Matthews Arena before moving to the Walter Brown Arena at Boston University in 2005 . In 2006 the tournament took place again in the Matthews Arena before it was played in 2007 at the Whittemore Center in New Hampshire.

Attendees

The men's division currently has eleven members and the women's ice hockey division has ten members.
