The TD Garden is a multifunctional hall in the US city of Boston in the state of Massachusetts . It is the athletic home of the Boston Bruins from the National Hockey League (NHL) and the Boston Celtics from the National Basketball Association (NBA). The owner is the Delaware North Companies .
history
When the stadium opened on September 30, 1995, the name of the stadium was still Fleet Center , built right next to the legendary Boston Garden , which was replaced by the Fleet Center. A maximum of 19,580 spectators fit into the stadium, there is 18,624 for basketball games and 17,565 for ice hockey games. The arena was designed by the architecture firm Ellerbe Becket, Inc. , which also planned numerous other stadiums. It cost $ 160 million to build. The building also houses the counter and waiting area of Boston North Station , the track area of which is connected to the north of the building.
The name
During the construction period, Shawmut Bank secured the naming rights to the new stadium. The most stubborn competitor in bidding for the naming rights was Fleet Bank . Ironically, the Fleet Bank took over the Shawmut Bank before the arena was even completed, effectively bidding against itself. Shortly before the opening, the seats, which already had the Shawmut logo on them, had to be replaced. After the FleetFinancial Group merged with Bank of America , the company bought itself out of the contract on December 31, 2004. The Delaware North Companies were able to resell the rights. TD Banknorth, the regional branch of the Toronto-Dominion Bank , was awarded the contract on March 3, 2005 . In the meantime, the naming rights have been sold on eBay for 30 individual days. The auction raised US $ 150,633.22.
