The Rogers Place is a multi-purpose arena in the Canadian city of Edmonton , province of Alberta . The new building replaced the Northlands Coliseum , which was inaugurated in 1974 . The building was in downtown Edmonton on an old parking lot between 101st and 105th Streets and 104th and 105th Avenues . Special features of the new venue are a winter garden and a glazed pedestrian bridge over 104th Street. There is also the Community Rink , a public ice rink .

history

Since the Northlands Coliseum opened , the Edmonton Oilers from the National Hockey League (NHL) played their home games in the arena. It was the second oldest hall, after the Madison Square Garden (1968) of the New York Rangers , in the NHL. The Northlands Coliseum (16,839) also did poorly in terms of space . Only the MTS Center of Winnipeg Jets (15,015) offers less spectator seats. In order to keep the Edmonton NHL location, a modern arena had to be built. After more than six years of preparatory work, negotiations and disputes, Rogers Place was created on the 16 acre (64,752  m 2 ) site .

In addition to the Oilers' games , the arena is also used for concerts , shows and other events. The new arena offers 18,347 seats for ice hockey games and was completed and opened for the 2016/17 NHL season .

On March 3, 2014, work began on building the arena. First of all, fencing in the site, setting up construction trailers for construction workers and clearing the parking lots of curbs, lighting and trees were on the plan before the earthworks began.

The arena is the first Canadian NHL venue with a LEED certificate in silver for sustainability and energy saving. On September 1, 2016, the official handover of keys from the construction company PCL Construction to the Oilers took place in a ceremony . Adjacent to Rogers Place is the CAD 32 million Grand Villa Casino with an area of 60,000 sq ft (around 5,575 m 2 ) with 600 one -armed bandits , 28 table games (e.g. poker or blackjack ) and seven restaurants, which opened its doors on September 7th of that year.

The opening ceremony with the cutting of the ribbon was celebrated on September 8, 2016. Two days later, interested parties were invited to visit the new building on the open house. The 57,700 tickets for the event were sold out in no time. New Zealand-Australian singer Keith Urban was the first artist to give a concert at Rogers Place. On September 16, 2016, Urban stopped in Edmonton on his ripCord World Tour in front of over 18,000 visitors.

The Oilers played their first home game of the 2016/17 preseason against the Calgary Flames (4-2) on September 26, 2016. The day before, the Edmonton Oil Kings played their first WHL league game against the Red Deer Rebels . The Oil Kings won 4: 3 in front of 18,102 fans in a sold out house. The Oilers' first home game of the new NHL season took place on October 12, 2016. The opponents were again the Calgary Flames, who were defeated 7: 4.

The bronze statue of Wayne Gretzky , which was erected in front of the Northlands Coliseum in 1989 , was dismantled in August 2016 and now, after a restoration , stands in front of Rogers Place.

The project participants

The city of Edmonton will own the arena and ice rink. It pays a large part of the construction costs. It also provides transport links such as the Edmonton Light Rail Transit (LRT) and contributes the building site. As a partner of the city in the project, the Oilers Entertainment Group (OEG) acts as the operating company and is later the main tenant. It belongs to the Edmonton-based drugstore and pharmacy chain Katz Group Pharmacies Inc. whose co-owner Daryl Katz has also owned the Edmonton Oilers since 2008. The OEG contributes to the construction costs and pays for the maintenance and operating costs. The proceeds from the events will go to the Edmonton Arena Corporation . The lease between the city and the OEG extends over 35 years.

The American architecture firm 360 Architecture from Kansas City is responsible for the design of the arena , in cooperation with the subcontractors Stantec, Hemisphere Engineering, DIALOG, Architecture ATB, AMEC, BTY Group, CDML and Bunt & Associates Engineering . From the pen of 360 Architecture , among other things come MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford , the Sprint Center in Kansas City , the Nationwide Arena in Columbus , and the T-Mobile Park in Seattle .

The local construction company PCL Construction was selected to implement the plans . The ICON Venue Group is responsible for project management . She was brought on board in 2012 and is responsible, for example, for keeping the budget and time frame. The ICON Venue Group led z. B. overseeing the Pepsi Center in Denver , the Prudential Center in Newark and the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh .

Surname

On December 3, 2013, it was announced that the Canadian telecommunications company Rogers Communications would be the arena’s name sponsor for thirteen years . Rogers is also the namesake of the Rogers Center in Toronto and the Rogers Arena in Vancouver .

costs

At a press conference on February 11, 2014, representatives of the City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Oilers announced that all obstacles to the construction of the modern multifunctional arena have been removed and construction can begin soon. Rogers Place, including the underground car park , is to be built at a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) of CAD 480 million .

In total, the entire construction project was planned with a budget of 604.5 million CAD. The City of Edmonton will provide part of the total. On the one hand, the funds come from the Community Revitalization Levy (CRT) pot . The city's CRT was initiated by the Alberta government to promote underdeveloped neighborhoods and areas and increase economic growth . On the other hand, the city will finance part of the income from the property tax , fees from city parking lots near the arena and the planned subsidies for the old Rexall Place .

The Katz Group makes its financial contribution to the arena through the Oilers Entertainment Group (OEG). The OEG has rented the new event hall for 35 years and pays a portion of the costs with the rental payments. In addition, there is a part from cash payments from the OEG. In addition, $ 125 million from ticket sales contributed to the total.
