history
The foundation stone for the new venue was laid on October 3, 2005. When the city of Newark announced that it would cancel the project because of excessive costs, the New Jersey Devils agreed to support the construction with 100 million US dollars .
Initially, it was also planned to relocate the New Jersey Nets NBA team , which is also based in the Continental Airlines Arena, to the new Prudential Center. Eventually, however, the Nets said they would stay at their old venue until 2010 and then move to the new arena in Brooklyn , New York City . This would mean that two similar arenas would compete in this area in the future.
The arena was opened on October 25, 2007 with a series of concerts by the New Jersey-based rock group Bon Jovi , and on October 27, the New Jersey Devils played their first league game in the new stadium. The opponents were the Ottawa Senators , also the last opponent in the Continental Airlines Arena in their last NHL season . The Senators won 4-1. The Devils celebrated their first win (6: 1) four days later against the Tampa Bay Lightning .
In early 2010, the New Jersey Nets announced that they would play at the Prudential Center from the 2010/11 season . Due to some delays in their move to New York, the Nets wanted to play in Newark up to and including 2013. But finally the new arena of the Nets was already ready for the 2012/13 season and the Nets left the Prudential Center and will play in the Barclays Center in the future .
The 2010 opened Red Bull Arena the MLS - Franchise New York Red Bulls is just 2.5 kilometers east of the Pru Center .
Surname
In January 2007, Newark-based Prudential Financial, Inc. became the arena's name sponsor for the next 20 years. The amount of the contract was $ 105.3 million.
The sponsor finally decided on the arena name Prudential Center , although a large number of building complexes, mainly high-rise buildings and office buildings, already bore the name. The venue was nicknamed The Rock , which results from the Rock of Gibraltar contained in the logo of the namesake . The venue is also the first sports complex in the New York City Area to be nicknamed Center , a name that can be found mainly in sponsored sports venues.
