Bon Jovi [ bɑːnˈdʒoʊvɪ ] is an American rock band from New Jersey . Since it was founded in the early 1980s, it has sold more than 130 million albums. The band, which started out as a glam metal band , has mainly played mainstream rock since the 1990s . The composer Desmond Child , who composed hits like Livin 'on a Prayer , You Give Love a Bad Name or Keep the Faith with the singer Jon Bon Jovi and the guitarist Richie Sambora , made a major contribution to the commercial success of Bon Jovi .
history
Early years
After the song Runaway, composed by Jon Bon Jovi and recorded with session musicians in 1982, won first place in a radio talent competition, he and David Bryan founded the band Bon Jovi in 1983 together with Richie Sambora , Alec John Such and Tico Torres . The original recording by Runaway , on which u. a. keyboardist Roy Bittan from Bruce Springsteen's band, bassist Hugh McDonald and guitarist Tim Pierce can be heard later on the debut album released the band and became an international hit.
Bon Jovi was discovered by Derek Shulman while opening act for Scandal . Jon Bon Jovi was offered a recording deal by PolyGram . To this day there is only a direct contractual relationship between Jon Bon Jovi and the recording company, while the other band members work as employees on behalf of Jon Bon Jovis.
The debut album Bon Jovi was released on January 21, 1984. A little later, the band appeared as the opening act for the Scorpions on their Love-at-First-Sting tour of North America, including in Madison Square Garden . In Germany they accompanied the band Kiss .
After the rather moderate success of the second album 7800 ° Fahrenheit , their third album Slippery When Wet in 1986 brought the band the worldwide breakthrough with hits like Livin 'on a Prayer , You Give Love a Bad Name and Wanted Dead or Alive . Following an extensive world tour, their fourth album, New Jersey , named after their home state, was released in September 1988 . The following tour lasted until February 1990.
At the MTV Video Music Awards in 1989 , Jon Bon Jovi and Sambora played the pieces Wanted Dead or Alive and Livin 'on a Prayer with two acoustic guitars , making them the founders of the MTV Unplugged concerts.
After the Video Music Awards in 1991, at which Bon Jovi were awarded the Vanguard Award , there was a dispute between Jon Bon Jovi and manager Doc McGhee , who was fired in late 1991. In the VH1 telecast Behind the Music , the band reported McGhee had the New Jersey always moved on tour in the length and caused a total exhaustion of the band. There was also tension between Bon Jovi and Sambora. After the tour, the band took an indefinite break.
Solo albums and creative break
In the meantime, Jon Bon Jovi got the offer to work on the soundtrack for the film Blaze of Glory . The script gave the impetus for his first solo album Blaze of Glory , which was released in the summer of 1990. He was able to win Jeff Beck (solo guitar), Little Richard and Elton John as guests . The theme song was nominated for an Oscar for best film music and was awarded a Golden Globe .
Guitarist Richie Sambora released his first solo album Stranger in This Town in 1991 , on which keyboardist David Bryan and drummer Tico Torres and Eric Clapton played on the song Mr. Bluesman . However, the album only sold moderately, and the tour had to be partially canceled.
The 1990s
After the solo projects, Jon Bon Jovi and Sambora reconciled and composed for the fifth album Keep the Faith , which was released in October 1992. In the USA, where grunge has now dominated rock music, it sold significantly worse than the albums of the 1980s and only stayed in the top ten for a week. In Europe, however, the band was now more successful than ever; in Germany the album reached gold status after a week .
In November 1994, the best-of album Cross Road was released , on which the two new pieces Someday I'll Be Saturday Night and Always were. The album sold over four million copies in the US, received a diamond record in Canada , five platinum awards in the UK and double platinum in Germany.
Such left the band in 1994. Although he was not officially replaced, Hugh McDonald has since taken over his duties as bassist. On the official Hugh McDonalds website, the Bon Jovi albums are listed in the discography. He was also the bass player on the single Runaway and said in an interview that was held on the occasion of the VIVA Bon Jovi Day 2000 that he was there from the start.
In June 1995 the sixth studio album These Days was released .
In the summer of 1996 the band went on a tour of Japan and Europe. Jon Bon Jovi then recorded his second solo album Destination Anywhere (1997) and starred alongside Demi Moore in a short film of the same title. Sambora became a father and also released a second solo album under the title Undiscovered Soul (1998). Torres worked as a painter and sculptor and had a relationship with the model Eva Herzigová . A new album by the band planned for 1999 was postponed, but the single Real Life from the soundtrack of the film Ed TV 1999 was released in the spring .
From Crush to This House Is Not For Sale
The seventh studio album was initially to be called Sex Sells , but was released in May 2000 as Crush . Sex Sells was the title of a song that Jon Bon Jovi had written back in 1998, which ultimately did not appear on the album. The first single, It's My Life , which was created in cooperation with the Swedish pop producer Max Martin , is the most successful single in the band's history to date, mainly due to good sales outside the USA and was also the ZDF title song of the 2000 European Football Championship .
Overall, the band was now mostly successful in Europe and Asia. Two concerts at Wembley Stadium in 2000 were the last concerts there, as the demolition of the stadium began the following day. On June 10th and 11th, 2006, the first concerts in the new stadium should also be played by Bon Jovi; as the completion of the stadium was delayed, however, these had to be relocated to the National Bowl in Milton Keynes .
2001 saw the release of the first live album entitled One Wild Night with recordings from 1985 to 2001.
In the fall of 2002, the eighth studio album, Bounce, was released . Parts of the album were directly ( Undivided ) and indirectly ( Everyday , Bounce ) influenced by the events of September 11, 2001 . Despite global chart entries, some at number 1, the album could not keep up with the success of its predecessor Crush .
On January 19, 2003, the band played a three-hour unplugged concert in Yokohama , the recording of which was to be published. Instead, after the bounce tour in August 2003 , the band recorded semi-acoustic versions of their hits in their home studio, including It's My Life as a piano ballad. These recordings were released in November 2003 under the title This Left Feels Right . The new version of Livin 'on a Prayer was the first to hear non-band vocals by actress and singer Olivia d'Abo .
For the band's 20th anniversary, the 4-CD box 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong was released in 2004 with a DVD. The title and cover were a reference to Elvis Presley's album 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong - Elvis' Gold Records Vol. 2 . The CDs contain 12 rarities and 38 previously unreleased pieces.
On July 2, 2005, Bon Jovi played Livin 'on a Prayer and It's My Life at the Live 8 concert in Philadelphia and, for the first time, Have a Nice Day , the new single and theme song of the ninth album , which was released in October and November 2004 - very fast compared to the previous albums - was recorded and was released on September 19, 2005. In it, Jon Bon Jovi processed his disappointment over the defeat of John Kerry , for whom he had campaigned, in the 2004 US presidential election . During the recording, Jon Bon Jovi had written four new songs, of which only Dirty Little Secret was considered Bonus track appeared on the album. On November 2, 2005, the album tour began, during which the band played 56 sold-out concerts in the USA and Canada. There were other appearances in Japan and Europe. In July 2006 a homecoming tour of American football stadiums took place.
On June 8th, the tenth studio album Lost Highway was released , which reached the top of the charts in many countries. The associated world tour began on October 25, 2007 with ten concerts in the Prudential Center of Newark, New Jersey. Further performances took place in North America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Europe, including six stadium concerts in Germany in summer 2008. Bon Jovi played to a total of 2,157,675 fans and raised $ 210.6 million. This made the tour the biggest concert tour of 2008, ahead of those of Bruce Springsteen and Madonna .
On October 30, 2009, the eleventh studio album The Circle was released . In advance, the single We Weren't Born to Follow was presented in August 2009 , which was available in Germany from October 23, 2009. Two more singles followed, before What Do You Got? the pre-single for another greatest hits album was released, which was released on October 29th as a single and double CD and DVD. Depending on the version, it contains two or four new songs.
On April 29, 2011 it was announced that guitarist Richie Sambora would temporarily not appear on the upcoming tour due to another drug addiction cure . At the first concert on April 30, 2011 at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the band played for the first time without Sambora, who was replaced by Phil Xenidis , former guitarist of the Canadian band Triumph . Sambora returned to start the European part of the two-year world tour on June 8, 2011 in Zagreb ( Croatia ).
In March 2013, the twelfth studio album What About Now was released . The first single Because We Can was released in January 2013. In April 2013 it was announced that Richie Sambora had dropped out of the current world tour for personal reasons - specifically because of his addiction problems . Jon Bon Jovi stated that Sambora will no longer perform with the band until further notice. Sambora's departure from the band was officially announced in 2016.
On July 16, 2015 the song Saturday Night Gave Me Sunday Morning was released, followed by the album Burning Bridges on August 21 . It was the first album that Sambora was not heard on; However, he is still named as a co-composer of Saturday Night… . The producer John Shanks was involved in the first single and at least one other song on the album . Jon Bon Jovi called Burning Bridges a "fan album" because it contains new and older, previously unfinished and unreleased songs. At the end of the 32-year collaboration with the universal label Mercury Records , the contract with the label that provided for the release of another album was fulfilled. The title song of the album deals with the collaboration with the record company.
In August 2016 appeared This House Is Not for Sale, title track and first single from the on the Universal label on November 4, 2016 Iceland Records released 13th studio album . Richie Sambora was again not involved in the album; the previous session musicians Hugh McDonald and Phil X were instead named as official band members. On the official tour for the album, producer John Shanks accompanies the band as rhythm guitarist and Everett Bradley as percussionist.
On March 13, 2019, the 14th studio album for the coming year was announced. It should be entitled Bon Jovi: 2020 and deal with current political issues.
