Bounce is the eighth studio album by the American rock band Bon Jovi and was released in October 2002. The album was lyrically influenced by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 .

Emergence

Bon Jovi finished their tour for the album Crush in July 2001 . Three weeks later, the band began songwriting for Bounce . The first demos were recorded in November 2001. Influenced by the events of September 11, 2001, several songs were written that should arouse hope. The album should not be understood as a concept album for September 11th. The recordings for the album took place from March to June 2002. Like the previous studio album Crush , the album was produced by Luke Ebbin, Richie Sambora and Jon Bon Jovi.

The album is intended as a return to the roots of the band: Richie Sambora's guitar sounds are harder, the vocals rougher ( Undivided , Hook Me Up or Bounce ). However, the proportion of slower tracks is greater than in the band's early years ( Joey , All About Lovin 'You , Right Side of Wrong or You Had Me from Hello ). Slower and faster tracks alternate on this album. Most of the reviews of the album were bad, and the sales, which were high in the first few weeks, quickly subsided.

Information on individual songs

The first single Everyday is about the feelings of the band after September 11th 2001 and how one should go on now, is lyrical but more general in contrast to Undivided , which deals directly with the events.

Open All Night refers to Jon Bon Jovi's role as the Victor in the television series Ally McBeal . Jon Bon Jovi's wife was pregnant and was expecting their son Jake at the time. Jon could no longer devote himself to the series and the producers wrote Victor out. Jon Bon Jovi delivers a different ending here that, in his opinion, would have suited Victor's character better. He had previously written tracks called Open All Night , two of which can be found on the CD box of 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong .

Bounce is dedicated to Bill Belichick , coach of the New England Patriots , and is about winning the Super Bowl after years of setbacks. Jon Bon Jovi also wrote it to remind himself that he has to slow down occasionally in order to be aware of events in the present.

The song You Had Me from Hello was named after a line from the movie Jerry Maguire - Game of Life .

Hook Me Up is about a boy in the West Bank who witnessed the fighting between Israel and Palestine . He operates amateur radio and seeks contact with the outside world. The song is based on a story the band read in the newspaper.

reception

Although the album has not received much attention from the band in the long term, it received positive reviews from the press. For example, the album was rated 8 out of ten in Rock Hard . This was supported by Daniel Böhm with the following verdict: “Bon Jovi have thought about it - and are doing what they always did best: rock. And mostly hard. There are no more musical homages to Jeff Lynn, the Beatles or Bruce Springsteen today, and the blued sounds from These Days are now a thing of the past. Bounce is the band from New Jersey's most sophisticated and detailed album to date, has a bang and celebrates its best moments exactly when Mr. Sambora unpacks his seven-string (!) And bangs it. Everyday , the first single, is not only the best Bon Jovi song since the blessed New Jersey days, but also symptomatic of the direction of the heavier songs on Bounce . There are subtle loop and electronic gadgets, high-quality stadium refrains, fine arrangements and the fattest frying guitars ( Undivided , Bounce , Hook Me Up , The Distance ). But also friends of less tough Bon Jovi get their money's worth. For example, with the snappy Misunderstood, which is slightly reminiscent of the Goo Goo Dolls (with a singer / songwriter touch and Bon Jovi-atypical vocals in the chorus - absolutely great!) Or with You Had Me From Hello , the best quiet song on the album. The only fear is the certainty that the days until the single release of ballad garbage like All About Lovin 'Me and Open All Night are numbered and we already have to prepare for appropriate radio penetration. Housewives of this earth, let me tell you: No matter whether ironing, popping or cooking - EVERYTHING works better without these songs! Nevertheless: Bounce is a big surprise from Bon Jovi, who with this album have for the first time managed to satisfy their entire fan clientele, which they have built up over the years. Keep it up!"

When the band performs live, however, the album is noticeably bypassed - for reasons that are not known. During the Have-a-Nice-Day tour, only the songs Everyday as well as a few Undivided and Misunderstood were performed live, on all subsequent tours only Undivided and Bounce were performed live in rare cases. The reason for this is speculatively the fact that this album is related to the events of September 11, 2001 and the band doesn't necessarily want to remind them because of that. On the second Bon Jovi compilation Greatest Hits , released in 2010, Bounce was the only album from which no song found its way onto the track list.

To date, the album has been sold over six million times.
