Bon Jovi is the first studio album by the American rock band Bon Jovi of the same name. It was released in January 1984.

background

The first single Runaway , a song that Jon Bon Jovi co-wrote and with which he won a radio competition, reached number 39 on the American Billboard Hot 100 . Jon Bon Jovi recorded this song earlier in a demo version. Besides this song, Burning for Love and Come Back were the first songs written for the album.

After the band celebrated their breakthrough in 1986 with the album Slippery When Wet , the songs on this album were rarely played live, with the exception of the single Runaway . This only changed in 2009 when the songs Roulette, Shot Through the Heart and Get Ready made it onto the set list of the The Circle tour. Also on the compilations of the band published so far (worldwide) only the song Runaway was taken into account from this debut . Furthermore, Bon Jovi is the only studio album of the band, which includes She Don't Know Me, a song that no band member wrote; it reached number 48 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Interesting facts about the 2010 Special Edition

  • Only three of the four live recordings included with the 2010 Special Edition are known to have been recorded during the Bon Jovi Tour. The live versions of "Runaway", "Roulette" and "Breakout" are therefore not the same live recordings that are included on the bonus CD of the Japanese Special Edition from 1998. Only the live recording of "Get Ready" was already on the bonus CD from 1998 and can therefore be dated: The live recording was made in 1985 in the Shibuya Public Hall in Tokyo.

reception

Frank Trojan reviewed the debut in 1984 in the fifth rock-hard edition as follows: “Another product from the 'Melodic HM' brand is the first LP by a US formation with the somewhat strange name Bon Jovi. Among the special thanks is u. a. also the name Aldo Nova is listed. With that you have the same style as this group. Still, I actually like this album a lot, because firstly the production is very good, and secondly, apart from the cruel 'Get Ready' there is not a really bad song. For me, tracks like roulette or breakout are even among the best there is in this branch. I can warmly recommend this LP to people who occasionally want to hear something quiet but still stylish and can no longer hear the Great White or Santers. ”Trojan gave 7.5 out of ten possible points.

The album has since achieved double platinum status in the US , but it wasn't until the success of Slippery When Wet that sales of the debut album really got going. The album itself reached number 43 on the American Billboard 200 , and it was also placed at number 71 in the UK. To date, the album has sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide.
