Keep the Faith is the fifth studio album by the American rock band Bon Jovi . After a lengthy hiatus, it was the band's first album release in four years and the first of just three Bon Jovi albums from the 1990s. The release of the album was followed by two tours ( Keep-the-Faith Tour, 1992-1993; I'll-Sleep-When-I'm-Dead Tour, 1993).

Emergence

After the album New Jersey in 1988, the band members first pursued their solo careers: Jon Bon Jovi wrote Blaze of Glory , the soundtrack for Young Guns II , the title track of which earned him a Golden Globe , and a number one hit in the USA; Richie Sambora released his solo album Stranger in This Town , which peaked at # 36 on the Billboard 200 ; and David Bryan also released his first solo album, Netherworld . With Keep the Faith the band finally reported back and ended rumors about the final breakup of the band.

Like New Jersey , Keep the Faith was originally planned as a double album , the band recorded 30 songs, but eventually they released a normal album again.

In the run-up to the album's release, Jon Bon Jovi had his hair cut. With that he had also got rid of the symbol of hair metal . However, this sparked discussions about the band front man's hairstyle, which was rekindled again and again as soon as he had a new haircut.

The album should originally have been called Believe , but this was not possible because of Nike 's campaign of the same name .

On the cover you can see the hands of the band members forming a circle, as is used in some team sports.

Musical style

On the album, faster hard rock songs alternate with ballads. In doing so, the band moves away from the pop-metal sound of the last albums and tries their hand at more classic hard rock. The number of ballads has also increased compared to previous albums. However, the influence of Bruce Springsteen , similar to the previous album New Jersey , is easy to recognize ( I Believe or I'll Sleep When I'm Dead ). With this album Bon Jovi started the development of stadium rock .

Information on individual songs

The songs Keep the Faith and I'll Sleep When I'm Dead are still an integral part of the band's live performances, the latter often being played as a medley with various other songs.

Jon Bon Jovi wrote six of the songs on the album alone, more than any other album by the band. Of the album's six single releases in the UK, four made it into the top ten and all of them made it into the top twenty.

Some songs that were written for Keep the Faith but didn't make it on the album because it didn't become a double album as planned, made it as a bonus track, or 100,000,000 Bon Jovi fans Can't Be Wrong on the CD box Contains: For example Billy , Every Beat of My Heart , Miss Fourth of July , Starting All Over Again , Sympathy , Taking It Back or The Radio Saved My Life Tonight .

Keep the Faith

The single Keep the Faith only reached number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100, but number 1 on the mainstream rock charts in the USA, which Bon Jovi only achieved with Livin 'on a Prayer and Jon Bon Jovi with Blaze of Glory . After that, they haven't reached it again to this day.

Bed of Roses

The ballad Bed of Roses was written in a hotel suite in 1992, according to Jon Bon Jovi. He had followed a wedding from there and was depressed how these people, full of love and happiness, were enjoying their lives while he was sitting in a hotel room 3,000 miles from home. There he saw a piano on rollers that he had the hotel staff bring to his room.

The following night he went out with some friends and had profound conversations with them about God and the world. When he woke up the next morning in a melancholy mood and wanted to leave the hotel, he had a guilty conscience that he had had the piano brought but could not write a song. So he wrote:

"Sitting here wasted and wounded at this old piano.
Trying hard to capture the moment, this morning I don't know. "

- Bon Jovi: Bed of Roses

There is also a Spanish version of Bed of Roses, (Cama de Rosas) that has not been released but can be viewed as a video on the band page. The 2003 compilation album This Left Feels Right features a different version of the song, which for a long time was played live instead of the version by Keep the Faith . On the Lost Highway tour, the band played the old version again a few times.

In These Arms

On David Bryan's solo album Lunar Eclipse is a version of the song In These Arms , which is sung by David Bryan and accompanied on the piano. Every now and then he also takes on the lead vocals for the song in the band's live performances.

Dry County

Dry County is the band's longest song with a running time of just under 10 minutes and includes a guitar solo that lasts longer than two minutes. In terms of content, the song deals with the decline of the US oil industry and the related needs of those whose work depended on it. This topic is woven into a wild west picture and then told epically and set to music.

The song is very popular with fans and the band is frequently asked to play Dry County live. On the tour for the album Have a Nice Day , the band played the song live again for the first time in ten years. In response to popular demand, Bon Jovi played the song at the final concerts of the Lost Highway Tour at Madison Square Garden , which was recorded for a tour DVD and was released in November 2009 as Live at Madison Square Garden . Obie O'Brien, among others, the song list for the CD box 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can not Be Wrong has created and is responsible for the website of the band, already assured before publication of the concert recording that even on that DVD Dry County included would be.

The single and video version of the song is shortened to six and a half minutes.

I want you

The lines “All I've got is my guitar, these words and the truth” from this song were used in the film He's Just Not That Into You by a person on a social network profile . When the friends of one of the main characters read these lines, they immediately recognize that they are from Bon Jovi.

reception

HiFi magazine Audio gave the following verdict at the end of 1992: “It took four years for the gentlemen to wait for them - and now they sound almost gentle and soft, almost like the blown shorthair of namesake Jon Bon Jovi. Exceptions, like the first single Keep the Faith , are still reminiscent of the Sturm und Drang phase. Waiting for really hearty hits is in vain. Sometimes catchy guitar and especially drum-heavy pop rock à la Bryan Adams, then creamy-full rock ballads shape the current sound. The title (freely: 'Believe in us') almost looks like an incantation - which should work. "

In Rock Hard magazine following Achim Karstens judgment was published: "Four years have passed since the publication of the last Bon Jovi band album New Jersey passed four years in which a lot has happened: Jon Bon and Richie Sambora have each released a solo album, got into each other's hairs (which led to Jon Bon losing them), Speed & Thrash Metal have become socially acceptable thanks to Metallica, we have the Seattle boom ... Who needs someone like Bon Jovi? some may ask. After listening to the new work, this question turns out to be completely superfluous, because what the old Bon Jovi team has achieved here is unparalleled and the band was probably not to be expected. The five musicians managed to produce a total of 13 songs with a playing time of over 71 minutes, of which only one (Woman In Love) does not quite reach the level of the other tracks. But apart from that there is one highlight after the next, starting with the anthem-like opener I Believe to good mood music like I'll Sleep When I'm Dead or Blame It on the Love of Rock & Roll to Fear , one for BJ -Relatively unusually tough number. Well, and then there are the four outstanding pieces on the album, almost certainly the best the band has ever written: In These Arms is a soulful mid-tempo song with a captivating bass line and great vocal melody, Bed of Roses DIE Noise par excellence, If I Was Your Mother is unusually experimental and Dry County is an almost ten-minute anthem with excellent increases. You don't really need to know more to rush straight to the next store and bag Keep the Faith ! "

Also commercially, the album was another high point for the band. To date, it has sold over 12 million times worldwide and has been awarded platinum in numerous countries. This makes it the group's fourth most commercially successful album.
